Freedom of speech; good or bad?

Tagged:  •

Freedom of speech is a defining aspect of Western culture. It enables us to voice our opinions about the government, about other people, about the issues, about other governments. It symbolizes the freedom and liberty we are gifted with in the West and helps the government get a hold on what the people think and helps the people vent their feelings.

But what of countries who don't allow it? Most of these are repressive regimes who fear that dissent or public protests will bring about disorder and pull the country into disaray. While I understand this viewpoint, I see freedom of speech as a natural right. Why shouldn't the people be allowed to say what they say? So what if it causes unrest? If a breakdown of complete civil order occurs, then perhaps it is time for a revolution in that country. The information people recieve on the goings on of a country should not be decided by the state; the citizens have a right to know what is truly going on with the government and the outside world. And really, I feel like the regimes who fear that disorder will come about merely want to keep their tight grip on power, not do what is good for the country and its stability.

People just don't want chaos. There will be too many things to fix and more money will need to be used. That's why freedom of speech do not exist 100%. We have have things that we cannot say. Americans have more freedom than others. But if you abuse your freedom of speech and use it in the wrong way, it can get you into jail. Speech can be good or bad...it depends on the person who is speaking and the purpose of the speech the speaker is trying to pass on.
