In light of the recent new reports about censorship at the Emmy's I finally decided to write something about it.
Recently Kathy Griffin, Sally Field, Ray Ramono, and Katherine Higel were all bleeped. Why? You may ask. Because the FCC deemed their antics too riskay for public television.
Well lets look at what exactly they did, shall we?
Kathy Griffin's oopsie took place at the Creative Arts Emmy during her acceptance speech. The remark that was cut was, "a lot of people come up here and thank
Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this
award than Jesus." Then afterward, she held her award proud and high shouting, "this is my god now!" Now did the FCC really have the right to censor this? It's a semi-religious remark. What about seperation of Curch and State. She didn't tell people to bow down to her award or worship it. She used her first amendment right, freedom of speech. She has the right to say this. The FCC said the reason for the censorship was due to the fact that it was an "off-colour christian reamark". They didn't want to upset their christain viewers. Well, riddle me this, if she had made a comment about muslim or budhism, would they have censored it???
Moving on to Sally Field. Her's took place during her acceptance speech during the Emmys, Best Actress or Best Supporting, I'm not really sure. She began to talk about how her award belonged to all the mothers for their hard work and then went on to make, what is now being called, an "anti-war" statement. Her words were, "If mothers ruled the world, there would be no f-ing wars!" On american t.v. this was censored. It went to, "if mothers ruled the world-" then cut to a shot of the theater. In Canada, they merely bleeped out the expletive. Why didn't the FCC do this? Who knows. Maybe they were worried that Sally Field's influence with the American public was so great that immediatly the American People would want their troops brought back...oh wait, they already do!
On to Ray Romano. He was a presenter and used what can only be classified as a "strong word" in a joke. The joke was aimed at Particia Heaton, who we all remember played Debra on Everybody Loves Raymond. I haven't found out exactly what the word was, if anyone knows, please tell me!
Finally Miss Katherine Higel. All she did was mouth an expletive will she was on stage. Apperantly, they tried to hide it by changing angles, didn't really work out.
I don't understand why we had so much censorship. The Emmy's are aired at night, a time when all the little ears of the cornfield should be asleep. The naughty words being censored I can understand, but why are we censoring anit-war remarks or religious ramblings. I'm starting to think that the American government is getting way too influential, especially when it comes to the media. Have we seen the news lately? There is about a one minute update on Iraq and that's it. During Vietnam they had live footage of the carnage and the fights, the American people were well informed that what they were doing was not working, it was failing. No longer do we have 'real' pictures. The images of Iraq are like stock footage now. Tanks in the streets, troops running through streets, radicals burning the american flag, we are being blinded by the FCC and the American Government. The war is basically non-existent and stories such as the Emmy's dominate over them. It's sad how bad our censorship has become, isn't it?

There is worse censorship happening in America than censoring expletives.

I've known that it was getting bad, but I figured I would save that for another post...hopefully in the future if I'm not too busy. I've read a few books on the subject and read even more things floating around the internet, but the sites that you gave me have probably been the most insightful.
