On his sixteenth birthday Evan got a car, just like all of his friends. The difference is that Evan’s car runs on ethonal. Margie’s car runs on used vegetable oil. Imagine what would happen to the world if only 10% of cars ran on energy sources other than oil.
Global warming is an issue in current events that effects everyone all over the world, even if they don’t recognize it as a problem. But there are hundreds of things the everyday person can do to slow down global warming. By using CSF light bulbs, unplugging phone chargers and appliances when not in use, and taking the bus once a month the course of global warming could change drastically.
Earth hour, which took place in Australia last year (with more success than the world earth hour in 2008) saved ten percent of their daily output of electricity. During this one hour, participating Australians turned off their lights and electrical appliances. If more people were willing to help against global warming, so much more energy could be saved.
So why does this concern teenagers? Well, with rising gas prices, cars are not as practical anymore. But using ethanol, from sugar cane in Brazil gas prices in South America have decreased to about 89 cents per gallon. Some people in the U.S use the excess vegetable oil from resturaunts to power their cars. Another alternate to gasoline is battery powered electric cars and hybrid cars. Up until this point, hybrid and electric cars have been impractical and expesive, but soon that could all change. Students at Princeton University have discovered a way to increase the lide and energy capacity of car batteries. This invention could make electric cars more applicable and affordable for more people
Youth can make a difference for their world, and the world of others.
