Intelligence or Motivation?

Sometimes I wonder if high school students today actually want their education. I think about this often because whenever I go to school, students are always sleeping in class or are off in their own discussions rather than listening to what they are being taught. Teens in high school today need to realize that a good education is key to their success in life, and in whatever they choose to do with it. In a recent debate, students at my high school argued that their teachers do not care about what they do and whether or not they succeed in high school. Seriously though, I don't even think these students care whether or not they succeed in high school. Most of them smoke marijuana and cigarettes, and sleep all day in school. They need to see themselves they way their teachers and peers see them. If they don't care about themselves or succeeding in what they attempt, why should their teachers care? At my high school, we do not have homework. We don't have an auditorium or a gymnasium. We are also not offered any college preparatory or advanced placement classes. All we have is general education. We are not even offered a language elective. It completely baffles me that anyone can receive a failing grade in my high school. So how do they pull it off? Are they really lacking the intelligence/smarts that they need to succeed in this school, or are they just not motivated? They need to see the BIG picture...

They are not lacking intelligence by any means, and people lack motivation all their lives not just in their teens. Why do they do what they do? The answer is simple ..... they're kids. Most students don't realize that there's life after highschool. But it is natural, you are suppose to learn from your mistake and grow from them. A select few mature faster than most (like yourself) and get fustrated at them. Believe me they will grow up in due time. Don't under-estamite the youth.
Ask your parents what they were like in highschool and see. (9 times out of 10 they will sugar-coat it though).

i think its hard to see the big picture when your in high school. i didn't really start getting motivated till i knew what i wanted to do...which was not until my second year at college. Now i study like crazy to get there. Living completly on my own also makes me work harder because i know how hard it can be if i stayed at a min. wage job the rest of my life.

If I were you I'd march to the city or State and demand change within your high school. That can't be normal and the youth deserve a chance for a better education. They might be more motivated if they have extra curricular activities to keep them from their lazy habits!

Adolescence is the time for them to get this all out of their system. I remember highschool great, we played and experimented but we did learn. To many it didnt look like we were learning, but we did when the time came we stepped up.
Children need structure though, don't dare blame the students. Blame the adults (teachers and parents). Children adapt to what they see around them.

I have to agree with you when you say that teens aren't being motivated- how can you get a good education or expect to pass a class when all you do is sleep or talk during it? It's hard to focus when others are distracting you like this too. I don't think our generation is stupidly intelligent (now there's an oxymoron for you) but we are just going very lazy. I see that many people want to get the best but aren't willing to work for it. Life is so unpredictable and hard to predict, most especially in high school...
wow.
Smile! It makes each day brighter! Oh please Oh please Oh please...

I look bored in half my classes in COLLEGE. Why? Because while I enjoy the topic, the class itself is rather boring. Sometimes I'll get a really cool history lecture, but most of the time it's all about the different wars the emperors fought, and I'm not interested in that. In micro, it's all stuff I already know. I act bored because I AM bored. Why bother hiding it...
