plastic surgery from the horse's mouth

I have read some of the other blogs about plastic surgery and just wanted to clear the air on some common misconceptions that I believe are floating around out there. Let me begin by saying that I think plastic surgery is a very personal choice for only the patient and doctor to make. Sometimes its to correct a defomity and sometimes its for aethetic appeal, either way I dont believe anyone should be judged for their decision.

I read that 70% of people who decide to have plastic surgery are depressed. This is NOT TRUE. Some people have a disorder called BDD or Body Dismorphic Disorder which makes them believe that they are disfigured in some form, usually in the face. These people in extreme cases chose plastic surgery as a means to correct this psychological disorder. If BDD is not diagnosed properly the surgeon may decide to operate only sending the patient into deep depression. This disorder can only be treated by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and or SRIs (depression medication) only about 3% of plastic surgery patients have BDD.

Concerning risks associated with surgery, of course they are there to consider. There are risks associated with ALL surgeries not just plastic. Whats important is to do your research! Time and time again patients call and are so surrprised at the cost of the surgery. Im sorry but in this industry you get what you pay for. You want to have a face lift that you paid $5,000 for or $10,000 for? Well there is going to be a difference in the work. You want to find a board certified plastic surgeon #1 and #2 check on their credentials. Pay for the consultation to come in and meet them see what they have to say. Do you have realistic expectations for the surgery? Is the outcome what you were thinking of? The downtime, the restrictions?

I think alot of these "botched plastic surgeries" have to do the patients and their poor decision on surgeons. Yes burns from a CO2 laser are possible, yes rupture and implant slippage is a possibility. DO YOUR RESEARCH people learn the pros and cons. And in the end be happy with your choice because you know you took the time to understand EVERY aspect of the surgery and the recovery.
