So, recently there has been this big wave of concern about my graduating class and their lack of "pride". At my high school there is an incredible atmosphere of pride and we hold these quarterly pep assemblies to show our support for our sports team. We also hold hall marches to support our players who make it to state. Our pep assemblies aren't like other schools. The classes are split up in our gym and compete for the spirit stick. You don't just get to have the spirit stick either. You have to decorate your part of the gym with (appropriate) posters and other things and you have to cheer loudly at the end and yell your class' chant.
Well, my class (of 2008) was known for it's incredible pride. However, as time went on we were constantly being beaten down for our new tactics and our inventive ways to score big with the judges.
It's our senior, so we were in charge of the s-section at games. We were being told to sit down when we were cheering for our team because we were being "too loud", "unfair", and showing poor sportsmanship. You've got to be kidding.
I don't understand what has happened to the school system.
They're so worried about hurting the other teams feelings that they're softening up sports and the cheering that comes along with it. Public schools have become so incredibly obsessed with sugar-coating it's sports that they've lost sight of what a real game looks like. We go to high school games and are tricked. There's only positive cheering and not a single person is standing up in the stands.
You go to a college or a professional game and there's constant cheering, booing, people are standing and jumping around and the atmosphere is just a lot more real.
Maybe it's just because I'm a sports fan that it bothers me so much that we can't cheer for our team and show our dislike for another.
I wonder if our school district is the only one who does this.
If yours does let me know,
or if you had this problem tell me how you solved it or at least found a common ground.
Thanks!

Yeah, there was a problem like that at my school last year. We're no longer allowed to insult the other team. Isn't that half the fun? And one of my teachers was upset that not many people were wearing school colors and getting excited to show support for their team on game days. I never owned one single piece of clothing with my school's team name and logo on it, and for a good reason - I never had money when they were selling the stuff.
I don't need drugs - I have genetics.
I understand what you mean about not being able to support your team. The other people think it's obnoxious when the your team cheers loudly, but it's just pathetic that they can't have the same support that you do.
The booing is sort of a different story. I think it's rude to boo in high school because the players are younger and it's not the same as professional. But this is for regular games. For games against the rivals, then it's perfectly acceptable.
I think the Man (a.k.a. authority) equates enthusiasm for trouble making. Do you really have to wonder why teens are so apathetic? It's because whenever teens are excited they're told to keep it down.
This is also similar to my high school. It seems quite silly. as long as nobody is causing any phyiscal harm it is okay to yell and cheer for the team. it seems like high schools are transforming into baby formula instead of preparing children for college.
