My thoughts on Censorship of the media

Today I was doing a project for my Honors Government class on censorship of the media and discovered that the pros and cons are both as important as the real outcome if it was actually brought to the attention of the government. Censorship of the media is an important issue since we live in a digital age were the media is everywhere. On our TV’s we can find inappropriate scenes of a sexual nature that children can easily flip to. On the internet by typing a simple word or phrase, you can find porn websites. Even in magazines and newspapers there are inappropriate phrases and images. Censorship is an important issue because in some cases it needs to be done to not only preserve children’s innocence but to protect people who wish to not view inappropriate images or phrases wither porn or racial slurs. Yet in defense to those who feel that censorship is a load of bull I do agree. To allow  the media to be censored is unconstitutional. We have the freedoms as people and freedom of  the press is freedom of the media. We should be able to watch what we want, say what we want and not be penalized for it. If you do not like what you see than don’t  watch it.  In the United States Constitution along with freedom of the press the right to privacy, this was developed by the Supreme Court and is known as “substantive due process” which extends on peoples personal behavior that includes what they choose to watch. I have not chosen which one I favor more. I will let the people decide. Yet I do believe in protecting our future and that is children. They do not deserve to have their innocence spoiled by our sick society.

Did you know that certain photos of soldiers praying have not been allowed to be printed in the newspaper. They also haven't printed pictures of coffins coming back from the war. The wonderful US government that dragged us into this war censors what information you can see about it. As far as censorship goes I think anything that is illeagal activity should not be shown on TV and before 7 or 8 o'clock at night (regular) tv should be more resricted for younger viewers. After 10 or 11 and on cable the airwaves should be liberal.

There are many pictures of soldiers praying. In many cases, the press does not WANT to show that.

And there have been newspapers that published photos of soldier's coffins.

And those who posted those pictures are still alive.

We haven't lost the freedom of press or the freedom of speech.

Censorship may not be the proper word. Responsibility may be more accurate.

Just because someone CAN post pornographic pictures on a website and set up "Elmo" as a keyword doesn't mean that they should.

There are no real regulations on one's opinion over the internet (as blogs like this one prove)

There is, however, responsibility for what one says and writes.

Many people claim that we have no freedom of speech if we can't curse on television or show nudity or burn a flag, etc. However, many people of all ages need to grow up a bit mentally and take responsibility for their words and actions.

They say that the right to swing your arm ends at my nose. The same applies to speech and the media. If some show starts showing nudity and alot of people are against it, sponsorship will be pulled and the show will cease to be. That is not censorship, that is a profit-driven motive on behalf of the networks.

Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Press doesn't exist so that people can say whatever they want with no consequesnces, they exist so that a paper can say, or a person can say, "I don't like what our government is doing." and they can't be arrested or shot for it.

Look at Iran, which does not have a free press, and see how their newspaper editors and writers are being arrested for writing about the horrid things that are done in Iran (like stonings of women buried in the sand, or hangings of homosexuals, or even the rape of women and children for not wearing the proper clothing or being out unescorted. by a related male..

With Freedom comes Responsibility.

When it comes to the media durning times of war. There is naturally going to be censorship involved. It is nessecary, they are not going to show coffins for the simple fact, its demoralizing to the American People. This undermines the war effort, and wether you agree with the war or not, it puts our soldiers in a bad sitituation. I also believe it is necessary when it comes to national security. I am not well informed enough to establish a viewpoint on any other aspect of this issue. "When I go into politics, I will change Washington D.C., not let it change who I am."-me
