The Difference Between Iraq and Vietnam

The first major difference is that everyone who fights in Iraq has the right to choose whether they want to serve or not. Noone is making them be there. When someone signs up to be in the Army, Navy, Airforce, or National Guard, they know what they are signing up for. There is always a chance of our country going to war so the argument of, A war they didn't sign up for isn't relevant here. Our troops knew they could go to war at any time in their career so they did sign up for. On the other hand most of the troops in Vietnam went there because of the draft and forced to combat , they were fighting a war that they did not sign up for, and many of them were against it.

Secondly we have the support of the people to be a little different as well. When troops came home from Vietnam they did not come home to a country that wanted them there. Not saying the people here hated their citizens but in some way they believed them for the war. Soldiers got spit on and some were severly hurt. In this day in age we support the troops. People send care packages over to Iraq and a lot of people do the yellow ribbon thing. I honestly don't know anyone who would spit on a soldier.

Thirdly the reason of the war are different. We went into Vietnam because we were scared of communism spreading. Basically to keep the Soviet Union from expanding. In Iraq our main goal was to stop Saddam Hussien from using weapons we "knew" we had.

I think it is just important for other people to realize the Vietnam war was not fought with good intentions and I'm not saying Iraq is. There are going to be similarites between the two but you'll be able to see that between Iraq and the Revolution, it all depends on who you talk to. I didn't go into warfare but if you would like me to I can.

Have a good day!

The reason so many people equate Iraq with Vietnam isn't so much the details that you mentioned, it's the fact that we're going into a losing or lost-cause war in a country who's topology we know little about (especially compared to those who live there) with no intention of leaving (and now, little to no reason to be there in the first place).
