Advertisements: Entertainment or Annoyance?

There are advertisements all around us, yet whether we like them or not depends on how often we see them. America’s industries are highly dependent on advertisements for various products. Most of these advertisements are on television and most of them try to capture the viewers attention by using emotions. One of these emotions is laughter. These commercials tend to be entertaining sometimes, when they are first viewed, but as soon as they are repeated over and over, they lose their values. Many Americans love commercials that are entertaining such as the freecreditreport.com commercials or the phone commercials with the dropped calls that ruin conversations, yet sometimes these commercials are repeated enough to get the viewers bored. When someone is watching an interesting movie, after every five minutes they see another five minutes of commercials and then have to continue to watch the movie. It may seem okay to have commercials during movies since some people would use the time to get a snack or use the restroom but other wise it is plain annoying. For instance, if a person is watching television and the movie gets them into the excitement mode and a commercial comes up, they lose that feeling and have to learn to regain it when the film is back on. Commercials during movies also take up a lot of time for busy people who like to watch something once in a while. Half of the time they spend watching that movie is spent on commercials when they could have used that time to eat or rest. When people are flipping channels to see what is on the television, most of the time they don’t know what movie is playing because 75% of the time commercials are on. They would have to wait for every commercial to finish until they realize if they want to see what is on that channel or not. Another annoying factor is that during the commercial time, certain commercials are repeated during the same period. Even though some commercials are meant to be funny, others are not. Who would like to see a laundry detergent commercial in the middle of a scary film? Actually, how many people were getting to the climax of their movies when all of the sudden, commercials come up? In general, commercials tend to be more annoying that entertaining, and the worst part is that there is nothing we can do about it.

Commercials are placed at strategic spots in the movie, like your example, the climax. The characters are about to turn a corner, the lights go off, "We will be back after a few words from our sponsers." Viewers are less likely to get up and go to the bathroom, or get some food, because they are afraid they will miss something.
