Breaking Free of Some Stereotypes While Embracing Others

What do you think of when you hear that something is a stereotype? Usually, I'd easily assume you have a similar reaction to mine. Stereotypes are bad, or wrong, or misleading. Stereotypes tell us that all women belong in the kitchen or all black people are "gangstas" and the like. Especially if you've spent any amount of time on this site, you'd see some stereotypes aren't quite so bad.

I'll go through my typical day as a college student to give you a few examples.

I wake up, turn off my alarm clock, and collapse back on bed. (stereotype: all college students want to sleep in)

I go to class. If it's an early class, and I'm exceptionally tired still, I'll think about getting a coffee or other caffinated drink after class. (stereotype: all college students drink coffee).

After class if I have time, I'll eat breakfast and then log on to Progressive U to get a few comments in. I know I need a scholarship or two badly. (stereotype: college students are poor and can't easily afford schooling).

I go to other classes, but any homework or studying I do is limited. (stereotype broken: all students study all the time just to get by).

If it's a certain night, I may go to the coffeeshop to see a comedian or musician perform. (stereotype broken: All that college students do for fun is drink and party).

I don't party. I don't drink. I don't smoke. I don't have a boyfriend. I don't spend hours a day talking on the phone or using the IM. (many stereotypes broken here).

That's my average day, and for the most part it's quite typical. However, I try to be different than the populace by being a little bit more responsible when it comes to attending classes. I pay attention and take notes. I have to schedule extra time out of class to meet with project partner. I may not study much, but I retain most of the info anyway. I never got into smoking (I can't even be around cigarrette smoke without gagging) and I've seen a few alcoholics in my life, and that turns me way off on the idea of drinking.

I also do a lot of extra work in my free time. I'm considering taking Internet classes next semester to make up for classes that won't be available at my school anymore. I work on writing projects with the hopes that someday I'll be published. I have hobbies.

However, I see a ton of college students--and I mean a TON--that are pretty much the same. They drink all the time. They party all the time. They don't care about their classes. They represent the ever-popular assumption that college is one big party and you're all invited to drink.

The stereotypes of sleeping in and coffee drinking don't hurt any, so I don't see a problem with them just yet. (But remember folks that popular quote about moderation in everything).

So, some stereotypes can be good, bad or neutral. Sheesh. As if we needed more gray areas in life!

I have broken most those stereotypes. I take classes online, I hate parties, I hate large groups of people, drinking I do on occassion once a month or a longer span than that. Drinking makes me rather ill. My stomach is sensitive so I will pay for it the next day. I would rather stay sober than put myself through stomach pain. I have enough constant stomach pain I do not need anymore.

I drink one cup of coffee a day. If I drink more my stomach will hurt or I will get so hyper I will have a panic attack.

I have a boyfriend but sometimes it doesn't feel like it. We don't spend time together to much even though he lives with me.

I also have seen alot of alcoholics in my life. My uncle,my grandfather, etc. I could go on my family is disfunctional I guess like most are.

Stereotypes sometimes are correct I agree. I think the reason I do not have any friends is because I am so different. It makes me feel like I do not belong in this world sometimes.

Thanks for the comment!

It's cool to break some stereotypes (hey, we can't ALL be drunk when attending our classes!) but some are understandable to follow. Like the coffee thing.

You shouldn't say you have no friends! I bet there's someone you can at least talk to. That should count. (And heck, if all else fails, you can call me a friend. We tend to agree on a lot).

I would NEVER get drunk and attempt to do school work or if I was to go to a class. I did not even know people did that...I'm sure they do. In highschool alot of my friend's used to get high and go to class all the time.

Lol. I really don't have anyone to talk to or friends. Except some of the people on here, I'm sure that is why I am on here so much. I actually kind of wish my dad would get a girlfriend because I need a mother type figure in my life. Guys don't really understand certain things or they say "that's life" I'm sure you understand what I mean. I'm not a very emotional person but when I feel emotions I wish my mom was here. She could help me out with anything although she had 2 different sides.

I call you a friend. I am very funny about things like this since I have been screwed over by everyone. I normally won't admit that I feel people on here are my friends to them directly because I want it to be mutual. But I feel like your a friend. :)

stereotyeps are just generalizations. Instead of getting to know people, we just seem to take overly generalized information then apply it to anyone who could possibly fit the mold.

Coffeeshops are TOTALLY a college stereotype! It's the whole pseudo-intellectual thing, which I worked hard for four years, thank you very much!

Last week, my friend just taught me the word "stereotype". She said it's like a group of people dress, behave and everything the same. But I still don't get it, nobody is the same. What we think are the same are just the surfaces. If there is really stereotype, everyone will be a different stereotype. I think about eating and sleeping all the time, my laziness is beyond human imagination. I guess I am a new stereotype, hehe.

1: a plate cast from a printing surface
2: something conforming to a fixed or general pattern; especially : a standardized mental picture that is held in common by members of a group and that represents an oversimplified opinion, prejudiced attitude, or uncritical judgment

It's a good word to know, so you can avoid using them or believing them, because you're right! If there really is a stereotype, we'll all be a different stereotype. No one is exactly like another, and we do each other a disservice by assuming.

You could think of a stereotype as something that is associated with a certain group: I.e. thinking all Irish are drinkers and all British have bad teeth. Usually a stereotype is a negative thing, a wrongly thought notion that hurts people's perceptions of each other.

Was that a good definition.
