Many people are watching TV, getting online, as well as asking questions for the next up coming election. People are trying to figure out who the next President of the United States will be. Being in a war, people need to vote wisely to not only figure out who is best for the soldiers, but also to still help the people in America rich or poor. The best candidate to be president would be Barack Obama.
There are seventeen different candidates, but only two can run for President in the final votes. There is Joseph Biden who is a Senator from Delaware. He is the talker out of the candidates. It would have to be one of his strengths. He is a Catholic, who was thinking about resigning from being Senate after a tragic accident that had happened. Instead he went forward and took first in office. Currently he chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, as well as being vocal with his opinion about Iraq. He seems to know what to say and have a connection with young adults (abcnews.go.com).
Hillary Clinton, the female candidate. Brave or ignorant? She has been in the Senate for the last eight years now. She has decided to go larger and run for President. She has already been first lady of the White House and her husband was President at one time. She does have a lot of potential as President with her experience that she has. Also she has traveled to 83 different countries as well as chaired the Task Force on National Health Care Reform. She also has raised awareness of health issues for Americans. Hillary Clinton has made herself known from many different things. Growing up she was raised with both political parties. Her father was Republican, and her Mother, Democratic. Hillary Clinton is an open and outspoken person. She will defend and protect whoever, or whatever even if that it might degrade her husband's presidency ( abcnews.go.com).
Chris Dodd, who is the son of the late Senate, Thomas Dodd. Being Senate is a family business for him. He was born into politics and cannot seem to get away from them either. Dodd has been enlisted in the Army Reserves, but never served in a war. Dodd never was in Politics until his father was forced to retire. Dodd joined the family business and was soon elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1982, he was elected as a Senator of Connecticut. While he had a late start on having children. That did not stop him from helping children. Dodd created the first children caucus to advocate for children's issues. The National Head Start Association named him Senator of the decade because of his support for early childhood education. Dodd has been a key proponent of the Family and Medical Leave act and is still trying for a patient's Bill of Rights. Chris Dodd is chairman of the Senate Banking Committee and a member of the influential foreign Relations Committee. Dodd used to be outspoken and for the war in Iraq. He has now changed his mind and is an opponent of the war (abcnews.go.com).
John Edwards, another candidate running for President was a trial lawyer for twenty years. He specialized in malpractice and personal injury cases. In Washington, people named Edwards the sexiest politicion alive. While in Congress, he was a freshman senator, who championed issues like Health care, Social Security, and Education. he wanted everything that can help all Americans. John Edwards was a member of the Select Committee on Intelligence Committee, but this career did not seem to last long with Edwards. Edwards ran for President in 2004. He dropped out realizing it would be tough to win in a reelection campaign, especially with what is going on with Iraq. He was running the thematic campaign based upon America. He was separating the rich from the poor. After the Campaign was over, Edwards worked on an anti-poverty work and opportunity at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He joined the Fortress Investment Group. In 2006 John Edwards sent out his second Presidential Campaign (abcnews.go.com).
Mike Gravel, who is the oldest candidate running for President in 2008. He believes that the War in Iraq is similar with the Vietnam war. Gravel was the first Democrat to announce his candidaticy, for President, but was not known for about a year later. His statements during Democratic debates gained him quick notice to the people. Gravel would use humor to get the point across. He was not ashamed of any part of his life, willing to talk about the good and bad in his life. While Gravel is on Medicare, he still believes Medicare should be phased out because of the economic debt the country faces. He has never served in a war, but believes he could win the bid for Presidency with $10 million for travel and salary for staff. He also believes he only needs fifteen people on his staff (abcnews.go.com).
Dennis Kucinich is a peaceful person. He is anti-war and also favors the universal single payers, not-for-profit health care. The first thing Kucinich wants to do is to end the war completely. Through out his web site he wanted peace signs and slogans about ending the war. All of his campaigns are about peace and ending the war. He is a senator of Ohio (abcnews.go.com).
Barack Obama, was only known to be a Senator from Illinois with a funny last name. Now, he has decided to be a serious candidate for the 2008 election. Obama worked with many churches and community organizations to help poor neighborhoods. In 1990, Obama was elected the first black President of the prestigious Harvard Law Review in its 104-year history. He successfully won that position in a district on Chicago's South Side. Four years later, he lost in a race for a U.S. House seat. The man beat him by nearly thirty percentage points, the man was Bobby Rush. Obama became more successful in 2004 when he ran in the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate seat that was being vacated by Senator Peter Fitzgerald. Obama won the vote with more than fifty percent, where there was six other Democratic opponents. Obama is only the third black senator since reconstruction. Obama served in the Foreign Relations Committee on Veterans' Affairs, the committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pension, as well as the senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs. Obama officially entered the President campaign in 2007 (abcnews.go.com).
Bill Richardson, who is already a member of the White House. He is a Cabinet member, as well as a UN ambassador. Currently is the governor of New Mexico. While his mother is not an American Citizen, he was born and raised in America. If elected as President, he would be the first hispanic to be President. He would have a strong bond with America and Mexico. Richardson sevred two years as a staff member for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. In New Mexico Richardson was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1982. He worked in Congress for fourteen years. He was a key proponent of the North American Free Trade Agreement. In 2002, he was elected as governor of New Mexico. As governor he has worked to strengthen education, increase the state's per-capita income, and reduce drunk driving (abcnews.go.com).
While those are all of the Democratic candidates running for president, now how about the Republicans how are they doing? Are they working just as hard as the Democrats?
There are many different Republicans running for president this year, there is Sam Brownback, who is a senator who believes that his political identity is through faith. Brownback has been a senator since 1996. In 1986 he was a Kansas Secretary of Agriculture. He was the youngest to ever hold the position. In 1990, he was a White House fellow, worked in the office of the United States Trade Representative. Brownback ran for Congress in Kansas' second district in 1994, he gained the GOP control of the House for the first time in 40 years. Brownback became a member of the New Federalists who are people who wanted to make an attempt to reduce the size of the Federal Government. In 1996, Bob Dole resigned his office to make a full-time bid for the White House, Brownback won Dole's seat, while reducing the size of the government, reforming congress, and returning to traditional values. While being Senate, he has maintained a conservative voting record, especially with social issues. Brownback is against abortion rights, gay marriage, and the embryonic stem-cell research. Brownback is in his second senate term and also chairs the conservative Senate Values Action Team, and co-chairs the Senate Cancer Coalition. Browback is involved in Human Right issues at home and abroad, and has also fought to lower prison recidisms rates. He became the co-chair of the Human Rights Caucus, and has worked with Democrats. Has also worked with human rights in North Korea, and has helped to prevent human trafficking (abcnews.go.com).
Rudy Giuliani is a man whose life changed over night from the terrorist attack on 9/11. He was known for his steady leadership, and he left office in New York City during the worst terrorist attack in the nation. Giuliani started out as a Democrat and switched over to Republican later on in his life. In the 1970's Giuliani signed up for the draft lottery, but was never called for service. In 1970 he joined the Office of the US Attorney and quickly moved up the ranks. 1973, he was named chief of the narcotics unit and shortly after named the executive US Attorney. Later he switched his party from Democratic to an Independent in 1975. For four years, Giuliani worked as a private sector, but only to return to work for the federal government in 1981. On 9/11, Giuliani ran to the scene, which earned him national hero, where he was named Time's Man of the Year, and knighted by the Queen of England. In February 2007, Giulaini formally entered the Republican Nomination (abcnews.go.com).
Mike Huckabee is a person who still believes in hope. Huckabee's parents are Democrats, but he became a Republican as a teenager. In 1996, Huckabee became the governor of Arkansas. Huckabee was chairman of the National Governor's Association and also chairman of the Education Commission of the States. He also signed the legislation that created the ARKids First, which is a program that provides health insurance for children (abcnews.go.com).

Hunter is chaired as the top Republican on the House of Armed Services Committee in 2003, until 2006 when the Republicans lost control of the Congress. Hunter is very outspoken when it comes to the issue about immigration. He is opposed to the North American Free Trade Agreement and supports having steel fencing along the California-Mexico boarder. Hunter is an opponent of amnesty for undocumented immigrants and is an influential anti-immigration voice in Congress. Since the 9/11 Duncan Hunter has fought for money for the military. He joined the Army in 1968 and was awarded a bronze star for his service. At age 32, he was elected to congress in 1980 (abcnews.go.com).
In 1982, John McCain won a Congressional seat from Arizona. Four years later, he was elected to the Senate. In 1987, McCain was accused of a prominent role in a scandal that nearly destroyed his political career. In the 1990's, McCain became an outspoken supporter of campaign-finance reform. He was chief sponsor of the controversial legislation which banned so-called soft money. McCain won the Michigan primary, but his campaign fell apart in South Carolina because the people are worried about his temper. If elected as president John McCain will be the oldest person elected to a first-term as president. McCain has voiced his opinion strongly about his political future on Iraq and his support on invasion. Also the continuation to the country's national security (abcnews.go.com).
Ron Paul is almost known as Dr. No. He is a liberation and an obstetrician who has an on and off relationship with the Republican Party. For 2008, Ron Paul is running for President as a Republican. As President he would do away with income tax and with the IRS. As well as the Federal Reservation, the Department of Education, and the Department of Homeland Security. He would encourage farmers to grow marijuana for the hemp. Paul is serving his tenth term in the House of Representatives and has been in and out of Congress since 1976. In 1991, Paul thought about challenging George Bush in the New Hampshire republic primary. Paul is still a strong liberation, streak which makes him different than the other Republican candidates (abcnews.go.com).

After being Senate, he kept himself busy with acting, speaking engagements and lobbying (abcnews.go.com).
Barack Obama is still best to be President of the United States for this term. The reason he would be best is because he shows himself as a strong out going leader. He doesn't put everything on faith or hope or religion. He believes that for things to be done, people must work together to get through the troubled times. This gives the potential to get the people to stop blaming the President for the war and hopefully just end it. The other candidates running for President have potential, but Obama seems to be the one who portrays himself as an independent person who is willing to get the job done no matter what it takes. He also wants to help all Americans rich or poor, also being involved in with schools, he makes it seem to understand what is going on with America and America's people. The children are the ones who are getting the shaft out of all of this. Children are losing education, losing parents from the war. What will happen if a child is left behind? Eventually drop out, and only that child will know where their life will go, they might never go anywhere, may go on drugs, or end their life because they feel there is no where for them to go, yet with education dropping, there won't be any place for children to go, because they will not have the education that is needed for them to move on in life.
According to Robin Warner she believes that the best person to be elected as President would be Joseph Biden. She believes that he knows how to connect with young adults. He also is very vocal about his opinions on what needs to happen to the troops in the war and what needs to be done to America (Warner 2008).
The worst person to be elected as President would have to be Dennis Kucinich. Being peaceful is one thing, but to be President and be 100 percent against the war? What would happen if any country declares on America? What would a president do then when a different country is attacking us ( Warner 2008)?
Joseph Biden is an open-well minded person, but is not a great person for President. He seems like a good person to run a city, but not the entire country. He connects with young adults, but what about the elder?
I do agree on Kucinich being a bad person for President, because this country needs not a person who is pro-war, but one that will be willing to go to war when it is needed. I feel that Kucinich won't go to war, but try to make peace even when peace will not be the answer.
Gabe McCaige believes that the best President for the United States would have to be Rudy Giuliani. Giulaini seems to be a strong leader who has proved to be able to run a country. He has also done many different tasks that have already helped this country out in more than one way (McCaige 2008).
Ron Paul would be one of the worst President because it seems that he likes to change his mind on decisions that have to be made. He has already changed his mind multiple times on being Democratic, Republican, and being Independent. America needs a person who can make a decision and being confident with it ( McCaige 2008).
The best president wouldn't be Giuliani because while he has made up his mind on what he wants to be Republican or Democratic,. He seems to be more about the war instead of what is needed for this country. This country needs someone who is caring about both equally.
Ron Paul is not a good person as well as President either, because it does seem as though he has a hard time making important decisions that have to be made.
Seth Houx believes that the best President for the United States would have to be Bill Richardson. He already has experience working in the White House as well as working with other countries, and making trades. he would understand what is already happning in the White House with the current President. This makes it easier to switch over in the middle of a war ( Houx 2008).
The worst person to be President would have to be John Edwards. He seems to have the attitude of being better than all. he doesn't seem to be a person to take control, but one who will have many assistants to help him made decisions (Houx 2008).
I personally don't believe that either one of them are good to be President for this country. Richardson may be one who will allow more immigrants in, with his understanding that his parents are immigrants, why would he want to stop immigrants. He understands their situation more than any other person running for president. The reason this is bad, is there is a possibility that he would allow illegal immigrants into the United States. People of America are already complaining to the President about the immigration problem and how Americans are losing their jobs. People are not going to want to have a President knowing there is a possibility of allowing immigrants to come in.
John Edwards has potential, and knows what he wants in the White House, but he isn't who I would be willing to vote for as President. There is something about him that has not caught my attention for me to want him to be President.
Barack Obama is still the best candidate to become President of the United States. While many other people may not agree with it, but he has a statement on why things should be done the way they are. All candidates have potential to be President, Obama just seems to have more coming with just being different than the others.

Member of the Progressive U Alumni Association

I don't like any of them. I guess I will cast a third party protest vote.

I think Obama has made himself pretty much unelectable by his 20 year association with a an America hating racist.

He's not actually an "America hating racist", if you see his comments in context.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=QOdlnzkeoyQ is what he said after 9/11, he was just making the point that hatred begets hatred so terrorism begets terrorism, which you may disagree with but the fact is America has killed innocent people in other countries with our bombings (not on purpose, and with good intentions, but the people are still dead). And he says 9/11 was a tragedy, so it's not like he was saying it's a good thing. With the "chickens" quote, he was actually quoting someone else.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=RvMbeVQj6Lw&feature=related is the "God damn America" one, where he's actually damning America's history of racism, and maybe he's a bit extreme about it but if you watch the video you'll see he doesn't actually hate America.
He's also said HIV/AIDS was caused by the government, but all that proves is he has some crazy beliefs. Plus if you look at the Tuskegee Experiments, it makes more sense that he'd think so.
I don't think Obama associating with a guy who has some crazy beliefs and is a bit more extreme than most people are is a bad thing. Would you want a president who abandons friends for political reasons, or who only hangs around people who agree with him/her?

Member of the Progressive U Alumni Association

I don't think he should abandon people for political reasons. But I do think he should exercise better judgement about who he hangs around with in the first place. Good judgement is perhaps the most essential quality in a President and I don't think that being associated with the Reverend Wright reflects it. Beyond being somewhat crazy I remain convinced that the Reverned Wright is an American hating racist no matter how you try to rationalize it. Compare his words to those of Don Imus or Geraldine Ferraro. I'd say that Wright was a thousand times worse. I wouldn't sit in a Church where that kind of hate was being spewed for 30 seconds. I would NEVER do the man the favor of listening to his entire sermon.

And it is MORE then just being associated. Wright was his spiritual advisor and Obama has described himself as a committed Christian. I would expect the spiritual advisor of a committed Christian to have a profound influence over that person's beliefs and actions. That's frightening. And we saw how some of that spiritual advice rubbed off on Michelle Obama who has never found a reason to take any pride in the country that sent her to Princeton or lets her live a very upper middleclass lifestyle.

But you are entitled to your opinion. I probably won't change yours and I'm certain you won't change mine. I hope the American people show good judgement and reject a candidate who for 20 years has demonstrated such poor judgement. If it makes you feel any better I don't have anything good to say about Hillary or John McCain either.

How many America haters have served in the military? Reverend Wright was in the Marine Corps and then the Navy, and he got 3 presidential commendations from LBJ. He was invited to the White House when Bill Clinton needed to meet with pastors during Lewinsky scandal. People check up on who's being invited before they do the inviting, and if they had found out that Wright was such a racist he would not have been invited. White pastors have come out to say that he's not a racist (including the pastor of the Clintons' 90s church), as has an interracial couple he married. Anyway, what evidence do you have that he is a racist? All he's spoken out against is white racism, and while he's wrong in assuming it's everywhere, he hasn't attacked white people for being white (which makes him different from Imus). He's done important community work (with the prison ministry and fighting AIDS), and a few phrases taken out of context do not represent who he is. Since you're condemning him, you do owe it to him to at least see what he says in context before you condemn. He's said some crazy stuff, but I'm sure I could take some of your statements out of context to make you sound like some type of hater if I had enough material. And I'm sure you've said some extreme stuff at some point, and if you haven't, then you must never get angry, but that would make you the different one. Also, there's good information on his Wikipedia page which you should check out if you want to be accurate when you're condemning him.

About Michelle Obama - being proud of the country and appreciating what the country does for you are two different things. I know she appreciates what the country's done for her, I've heard her speak. But being proud for the country is about everyone, not just her. There are people in America who die because they can't afford health care, and meanwhile this country lied to invade a country that we say we're giving freedom, but the majority of them don't want us there. It's hard to be proud of that. So when you take stuff like that into balance, it's understandable not to be proud of the country. And you can love this country, and want to make it better, without being proud of it right now.

And you have nothing good to say about any of the candidates? Wow. I'm not that happy with Hillary Clinton or John McCain right now, but I believe that they both want to make this country better, so I respect them for that at least.

I find it funny and sad that someone would question one's statement without lack of evidence only to make his own.

"and meanwhile this country lied to invade a country that we say we're giving freedom, but the majority of them don't want us there."

Very interesting. How many IraqiAfghani people have you met? How many times have you been there? What actual knowledge other than gordging on MSNBC do you actually have about the Iraq or Afghanistan conflicts? I would say to you, he who lives in a glass house should not throw stones.

It seems to me that you seem to be forgetting that there are more then just democrats and republicains that run for president. If you look at the track record of our presents that we have had over the years you will see that its time for a change. With change you need new ideas and ways of thinking. I say leave out democrats and Republicians and look at other parties that are running. You may be suprise in what you find and learn about the other canidates in the other parties.
