Religion, homosexuals, and Westboral Baptist church to lead the way

I have never been one to harass somebody else for their religious beliefs. I grew up a Christian and later converted to Darwinism. However, I feel as though I am constantly harassed by religious people. They knock on my door and I politely inform them that my household does not believe the word of God, they give me an hour long lecture on how I am going to hell etc. I am tempted to shut the door in their faces, however I realize that that will probably only fuel their fire.
At school, when I am out in the nice weather trying to study for whatever reason there is a man who walks around screaming at the top of his lungs about how my school needs to make every student take a class about the wrath of God. I am not quite sure how getting new classes instated works, but I am pretty sure that is not the way to go about it.
I really don't care, he can do what he wants. Our constitution guarantees free speech. My problem is with his sign that he walks around carrying. The sign reads "God hates drunks", "God hates homosexuals", "God hates adulterers", "God hates non believers", "God hates liars", "God hates sinners"...etc. The list goes down the line for quite a bit. To me, it sounds as though God hates everyone.
Anyway, I was sitting down talking to a couple of my friends who happen to be gay. They aren't flamboyant but I think they really like each other. This man walks right up to our table and just starts SCREAMING at them. He was rather derogatory and I was rather angry at the fact. It’s none of his business how people choose to live their life. I feel as though he should take it up with God instead trying to humiliate two people who never did anything to him besides have an alternate lifestyle.
Now the man gets made fun of so much. I think that part of his problem is that he is walking around talking about how much God hates people, when he should be talking about God's love. You catch my flies with honey than with vinegar. Not to mention this guy is a target, of course nobody takes him seriously. So many people just stand around and make fun of him. It is his own fault though. He is preaching to a bunch of college kids and we are pretty sure we know everything there is to know about life. For whatever reason it seems that in college a lot of students pursue and atheist or an agnostic lifestyle for the four years that they attend, maybe it’s the starving artist syndrome, I don’t know.
For my personal beliefs, I do not care to go into that much detail. I do not believe in God, and that’s as far as I will explain it. I just wish that people could leave other people alone. So what if they are not religious or they are? It is really none of anyone’s business how one chooses to live their life, well within reason, anyway. I just get frustrated when people yell at me for my beliefs. You can’t yell me into being a believer. Missionaries are a different story, they go to other countries and talk to people who don’t know God. However, people have a lot of opportunity to learn about the word of God. It’s everywhere so people just need to relax and take care of themselves, not everyone around them.
Case in point, Brianna Denison, people came from the OTHER side of the country to protest her funeral. It’s a small group of people from Kansas who protest at military funerals because they do not support the war. Its disgusting, that those people go in there are start chanting in the middle of everyone’s pain. I attended Brianna Denison’s memorial and thankfully, the protesters were escorted off the property. They were waving around signs which said "Pray for More Dead Kids," "Don't Worship the Dead" and "God Sent the Killer."
According to them, God hates Reno, well not just Reno, America, Gay people they use a derogatory term though, Roman Catholics, Muslims, Jewish people, as well as they hate ethnicities like Mexicans, Canadians, Irish, British, and Swedish people. According to them, every tragedy in the world was caused by homosexuals. They do not let their members marry outside the church, and since the church was founded by the Phelps family, doesn’t that make them marrying inside of their family? Anyways, they are extremely sure that God hates Reno, Nevada….If he really hates Reno, I wonder what he thinks about Las Vegas? This was all stemmed from the fact that they were here in Reno picketing a dead officer’s funeral and the police failed to “protect” them from the crowd. Apparently God already hated us, but he REALLY hates us because we attacked the servants of God, I am not going to lie, I was rather happy when I heard that. Those people do not deserve to be protected. It’s their’ own fault for going into the hot zone.
I guess I feel sorry for these people. I do not believe that they are true believers except for incest. They are ridiculous. Like I said before, it is no one’s business what their neighbors want to do in the privacy of their own homes. I do not care as long as it does not affect me and it is not something bad. Why can’t people just relax and give people their right to live?

Westboro Baptist Church is NOT a Christian church and Fred Phelps does not preach nor teach the word of God.
God does not hate everyone like they claim, because if He did, we wouldn't exist. The Bible says that God loves us, Jesus died for our sins, and that Jesus is the resurrected son of God, whom brings salvation to those who believe in Him, regardless of their sins.
Fred Phelps is preaching from a hate filled heart and Fred Phelps will open his eyes in Hell one day, because he turned so many away from God's truth. Fred Phelps and his church are going to hell, because they hate people and they hate God.

I am a believer, a Christian and i believe in the Bible. You do not and that's your business. But what I said about Jesus remains true nonetheless.

Anyway, Fred Phelps does not worship nor love Christ; Fred Phelps, his family, and his church hate Christ, they hate the Bible and they hate God. They are the servants of Satan because they use the Bible to preach hatred, and in doing so, they purposely turn people away from God. Satan loves Fred Phelps.

Main point: Fred Phelps, his family, and his church are not Christians.

I agree with your sentiments completely. I really dislike that whole group entirely.

I mean, Branch Davidian style, but without the guns. I don't get it.

Yeah, those Christians have a very perverse interpretation of the Bible, so it's best to just ignore them. Unfortunately in this world, extremist seem to pop up out of nowhere screwing up an interpretation of something. On that note, their philosophies are essentially the exact opposite of what the Catholic Church teaches (I'm Catholic by the way, and I'm in training to be a type of religious ed. teacher), so it's also best to not use them as a role model (for lack of better words) to get an idea of how Christians are suppose to be. Like I said, pay no attention to them, and do keep up your philosophy of letting people be.

I do not believe that they are Christians. Like I said before, I do not mind letting people be as long as they don't affect me. Those people bother me, its like they got hit with the stupid stick. They are unable to even present their arguments in a somewhat intelligent manner, they resort to going around agravating people who have lost someone they love. They claim to be God's followers, however they call people derogatory names which I am sure you can guess what they are. I was disgusted when I saw them at Brianna Denison's service.
Good luck with your studies.

You converted to Darwinism? What does that even mean? Does that mean that you believe in evolution? Or that you don't believe in god? Just a little confused.
As for the WBC, I'm not one to defend religion, but they are in no way representative of the Christian Church on the whole. I won't say that they aren't Christians. They clearly believe that they are spreading the true word of god, but I will say that most Christians aren't so totally insane, paranoid, angry and hateful.

I apologize, perhaps I should have worded that better. When I was younger, I was brought up Christian. From K-12 I experienced a Christian middle school. I learned a lot there, however I became very interested in Darwin. The more we talked about him and his views in school, the more curious I became. My mother is highly religious where my dad was not. I had to sort through my religion and I learned that I believe in evolution, it makes more sense to me and after I hit all the sciences in highschool, they just confirmed what I had begun to believe.
I do not believe that they are Christians, I was just extremely angry that those things would go and protest a young woman who was raped and murdered and have the audacity to stand outside and hold signs which said "pray for more dead girls" I know that they are in no way indicitive of the Christian religion. The only good thing I can say is that people like them keep our healthcare down from all of their incestousness...

I still don't exactly understand what you mean by converting to Darwinism. Does it mean that you believe in a religion as well as in evolutionary theory? Or are you an atheist or agnostic or whatever? Darwinism is really just a phrase referring to the theory of evolution by natural selection. There's not much to really convert to.
As for the WBC. I don't think it right to just say they're not Christians. They represent an insanely fundamentalist branch of Christianity, but they certainly believe that they are following the teachings of Jesus and the bible.

I am originally from the southern part of Kansas and I have a request: Please do not relate Phelps and Westboro (which is actually primarily run by his even more radical daughter) to Kansas. Although our track record isn't great (the whole gay marriage amendment was a step back, but we did manage to elect a great Democratic governor for two terms and got rid of the shitty Attorney General in the last election) there is no one outside of that church (located in Topeka) that actually cares for them and they shame our state to no end. It is a bunch of inbreds (literally, just Phelp's extended family there).

Anyways, that is my rant. They protested the V-Tech and IU funerals, soldiers funerals, gay funerals, and basically any publicized case. Elitists.

Sorry, I didn't mean to relate Phelps to Kansas, I was trying to relate them to lunatics. They would be crazy no matter where they are from. I don't understand why they don't leave the country if they hate it so much. If it makes you feel any better though, I am from the city of the damned according to them. I in no way meant to associate any normal people with those crazys so I apologize for offering any offense.
