Official Press Release

San Mateo, CA—(February 21, 2008)—Progressive U, a student-run social welfare organization that encourages an open discussion of current events, progressive values, and public policy priorities, is pleased to announce Shayla Price as the new national spokesperson in their mission to encourage high school and college students to think, speak up, and reach out. Price will become an integral resource for Progressive U’s marketing and media representation as the organization works to give students a voice in the media and support as they strive to make a difference in their communities and the nation.

Price is an author and graduating senior majoring in marketing at Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Despite financial hardship, Price managed to receive more than $100,000 in college scholarships. She has written a book titled, “The Scholarship Search: A Guide to Winning Free Money for College and More” to help other students achieve scholarship success.

“I am delighted and proud to have the opportunity to represent Progressive U in this new capacity,” states Shayla Price, spokesperson for Progressive U. “I consider this spokesperson position an honor and a remarkable privilege.”

Price, age 22, has been featured in more than 10 national magazines, including Teen People, Seventeen, Black Enterprise, and Better Homes and Gardens. She was interviewed by the renowned radio talk show hosts Tavis Smiley and Michael Baisden and was featured in “Campus CEO” written by Dr. Randal Pinkett, Donald Trump's Season 4 Apprentice winner. Price has also been an essential part of the success of Progressive U to date, helping to establish the organization during its infancy and acting as a source of support for members and staff alike.

"The cost of a college education has skyrocketed over the last 20 years, putting college out of reach for students who don't receive scholarship funding. Progressive U helps students find their voices, and make their voices heard, while providing valuable new scholarship opportunities,” states Art Morgan, executive director of Progressive U. “Shayla knows that struggle first-hand, and her experience with Progressive U over the last two years combined with her experience with mainstream media makes her an ideal spokesperson for our organization."

To date, Progressive U has awarded thousands of dollars towards higher education to outstanding students, in addition to becoming home to nearly 40,000 student bloggers and 250,000 guests each month. Students from around the country write and maintain blogs that have been picked up by the news media, public policy, and social welfare organizations around the world.

Wow, $100,000 in scholarships is incredible! Congratulations! I've been working on scholarships since last year (my junior year of high school) and I know how tough it is, so that is really awesome. It sounds like she will be a great spokesperson.

As I read this article, my mind began to spin. I have often wondered how scholarships are attained and after reaching highschool I have learned that you must take the initiative to find and gain them. Shayla is very inspiring to me, I have confidence that I too will be able to attain the money to get myself into the college of my choice!! Thank you for this great amount of encouragement and inspiration :)
