Last night my mom and I watched this movie on HBO that most of you have probably heard of....All Aboard Rosie's Family Cruise. I know that a lot of people were up in arms over the whole deal. In the film you can see how these "alternative" families are just as loving and functional as any other normal family. In many of the cases of two men or two women adopting children they adopt children that would not have a chance at being adopted due to their race, being a child addicted to drugs, or sadly enough their age. There is no reason why two men could not raise children in a loving, structured, and safe enviorment as well as a man and a woman. There were also a lot of couples who had had their children through invetro-insemination or by a seragant mothers.
In one point during the film the cruise stopped at an island in the Florida Keys and were greeted by people cheering and celebrating. There was a special celebration going on for these families. And that was great. The people of the island wanted to show their support and let these people know they could feel safe and have a good time. The next island they stopped at was not the same story. They were met by protestors from two local churches. Yes those people were exercising their right to freedom of speech and I applaud them for it. But the thing that got to me was in the process of exercising their rights they frightened small children and toddlers. Why in the world would someone want to do that? Those poor babies had no idea why those people were screaming at their parents. Heck those kids don't see anything wrong with their families and why should they. Then comes the question should the parents have even taken their kids off the boats. Yes, be proud of who you are no matter what lies ahead.

The problem is that children need both good female examples and male examples. Male role models (a Dad) is important because the father is the main disciplinary person. Children are usually more intimidated by males than females, and will listen to them better. Women are important because they are more tender and loving and can help make the child feel better, and will help the child to be compassionate. This is how people are, men are better at discipline and women are better at compassion.
In case you are wondering, I don't think that divorce is right. Kids need both their parents. If a parent dies when a child is young, there is not much anyone can do besides remarry, but it will impact the child if they grow up with two fathers, two mothers, or only one of either.
