There are two stories going around on the Internet this week. One of them is about a man in Hartford that was hit by car and the other is about a six-year old that saved his friend.
When crossing the street in Hartford, a man was run down in the street. He was on his way to the store to buy some ice cream when I a car ran him down. The driver took off and many people stood by watching in horror but not running to the man's aid. Then there were others who continued to drive by not stopping but driving around the man. On lookers gather on the sidewalk and finally a office pulls up and comes to the man's aid. Nobody went to comfort the man before help arrived.
Then there is a little boy Haden who saved his best friend from drowning. His friend jumped into the pool without the aid of a floatation device and sunk to the bottom of the pool because he couldn't swim. Haden his friend jumped in grabbed him by the arm and pulled him up. When people told him he was a hero his response was "I am not a hero I was just helping my friend."
What does this say about our society? I think many of us can learn from Haden. God teaches us to reach out and help each other and to love one another. Jesus spent a lot of time with children and as adults we should be good roll models for them. But there are also times when us adults can learn from the little children.
Don't just assume that when we see someone in trouble that someone else has already taken care of it. If you see someone in need don't ask if you can help be like Haden and just jump in.
