Over the past couple decades, technology has been on the rise. Numerous inventions have been created to make our lives easier and more 'fun'. Now almost everyone and their grandmother owns a computer. Now every son hopes to see an Xbox 360 sitting under their christmas tree.
Sure, all these inventions are good and great but we have to look at the con side of these things. With uncensored media on the internet many things are posted. Despite the efforts of TOS agreements and moderation things always has there way of slipping through the cracks. You're now asking yourself, "what do I mean?" I can name countless websites and videos on youtube and other major streaming video websites where objectionable content is located. This objectionable content is not only vile in many ways but it desensitizes us.
Can this be the reason why R-Rated movies are now much worse then they've been?
Can this be the reason why kids are more violent?
Now I know you've heard parents talk about video games like they know something, they usually don't.
However, I'm 17... I played numerous video games. I mean, I really noticed the violence in the game 'Gears of War'.
Although, it's just a video game. The scenes in the game are very graphic. Once again, I know there are age limits and stuff on the games but, let's be serious no one pays any attention to them.
Being subjected to violence--and objectionable content in general---hurts us as a whole. We can no longer be 'naturally good'. The fact that such content plays a volatile role in our society is quite sad. I think we should have SOME censorship on the things we view, or at least make it a little harder. Subjecting anybody to recurring images definitely has its effects and its been proven in numerous psychological studies.
What do you think about the content you've been exposed to in your life time, has it affected you?

The times I notice the most desensitizsation is when I'll be watching a movie with lots of death in it at school.
The death of people hardly stirs anyone anymore.
But the death of an animal and all I can hear in the room from classmates is "Awwww. That poor thing!"
And I'm sitting there thinking, "What about the human beings being killed?"

Not only does technology desensitize children, and the whole human race, it is another way for us to entertain our kids without really doing much. We can get our children to sit quietly and watch tv, play video games, or watch a movie while we do whatever it is we need to do.
Have you ever read Brave New World by Aldus Huxley?--Well, it's happening and the electronics are the first step. Not to sound like our lives are turning into one big conspiracy theory after another--it's just that we are always asking for more forms of entertainment. We always want our movies and video to have more death, more gore, more distraction.
I've never been a big fan of video games, I don't understand the addiction and the need to play for hours on end. Also, I'm the one who cringes, cries, and screams in all the movies that are overly violent.

I was in class today and the girl sitting in front of me said "OMG if I have to listen to this one more time I'm gonna slit my throat" and everyone starts laughing. Call me uptight but I don't think that sort of joke is funny, it's sort of sick. But sadly when you're blowing people's guts out every night on a video game making a little joke about violating yourself isn't a big deal.
