Millions Awarded to Fund Children’s Insurance

Thousands more children across 18 counties in California will be eligible for health coverage as the result of $7.5 million in grants from the California Endowment announced December 8 at the Arroyo Vista Family Health Center in Lincoln Heights.

As with programs such as Healthy Kids, Healthy Families and Medi-Cal, thousands of children under the age of 18 will benefit as a result of the grants designed to provide health coverage to children from families with incomes 300 percent or more below the federal poverty level. These programs, according to L.A. County Supervisor Gloria Molina, L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and State Speaker of the Assembly Fabian Nunez, are indispensable but severely under funded. Every year, thousands of California children go without health care, according to the California Endowment.

Although 90 percent of the children in the state are covered by one form of health insurance or another, 800,000 still do not have any health coverage, according to the Endowment. But with this latest allocation of funds, approximately $2.5 million for health care providers in Los Angeles County, and another $5.5 million across the state, thousands of additional children will get the health care they need.

I thought this was good to hear, and it also goes back to that new poll about universal health care.

I could not believe that over 9 million kids are uninsured. That's so sad.
