High School Musical--Where does the madness stop?

I remember watching High School Musical when it premiered on Disney channel. It was geared towards--you guessed it--high school students, but had that random let’s-break-into-song theme that used to only be workable in childrens movies. Young adults were a new ballfield for this type of movie.

Whatever your opinion, the movie was an instant hit. The next day, I was asking a friend, “Did you see that movie last night?” It was a Disney channel original movie phenomenon.

And now it’s getting more and more like Disney channel overrun humdrum entertainment.

HSM on ice! Merchandise like DVDs and toys. Special events at Disney World. Despite enjoying the first movie, I passed on seeing the second one, and the third will have to wait for me to care as well.

Why? Because the magic and inspiration are gone, dear readers.

The first movie was a brave undertaking. The musicality could have been laughed at, and the movie could have been a flop. Instead it became wildly popular overnight and brought to light th eissues of choosing what’s right as well as showing that breaking the label you’re placed in is okay.

I knew the second movie would not be the same. This one came about only due to popularity. In other words, Disney saw that they could reap more profits ($$$) from the movie’s fandom. Movies written without passion…they’re just empty in my opinion.

I completely agree. Disney can ruin some great ideas by just trying WAY too hard to make money off of them. It's ridiculous.

It's true. And it's kind of interesting to note something: Disney is one of the biggest companies in charge of entertainment or movies, and their greed only seems to be making them less impressive than ever. It's kind of sad. I mean, who hasn't grown up on Disney movies?

Moulin Rouge? Sweeney Todd? Best Little Whorehouse in TX? Chicago?

I love musicals, even the overdone popular multi-million-dollar films (that are geared to ADULTS) that I named above.

Children's movies aren't the only ones to break into song...

Oh I know that, it's just that teens could think differently. They want to break free of the child stereotypes of cute movies with musical quality. Of course, in more recent days we've seen a great deal of musicals and such coming to the movie theatre that become incredibly popular: The Phantom of the Opera, Hairspray, etc.

I don't really think the movie was geared at teens, though.

We've got shoes and socks at my store that say High School Musical and they wouldn't fit anyone older than 7.

I'll blame that on how children are more likely to buy the merchandise, and how the little ones are also likely to see anything with the name "Disney" attached to it. I do think the movie(s) were directed more specifically towards teens, but I could be wrong on that count. I probably should have put the tag "opinion" up on this blog if I didn't already.

No, I tend to agree with you... I just feel like they knew that kids would be enamored :)

Lately (the past few years) Disney actors have all sang at one point or another in their Disney career. This annoys me. I remember when I could watch Disney without seeing a music video in their commercials. Now I can't watch Disney without seeing one of their stars singing at one point or another. Yes, some of them can sing. But still. I'm not watching it to see them sing. If I wanted to see singing I would watch a music channel.

Wow, you feel that way too? The music videos do get quite repetitive, and I only rarely watch Disney channel anymore. I'm gonna try to list the ones I know that have had a music video up at one point or another: Hillary Duff (ew, sorry fans of HD), Miley Cyrus/Hanna Montana, Charpay from High School Musical, various others from High School Musical, Raven, Naked Brothers (what kind of name is that, anyway?), Jonas Brothers, and all the other little bands that the kiddies have forgotten about by now, like the ones who did "Kids of America" and such.

Yes. It's not MTV, so why is it being treated that way?
