Warning: This piece of write might offend some people. Do not read if you are allergic to bullshit. (Excuse my language)
Today, I had a discussion with one of my classmate. Out of boredom, we came up with a list of common stereotypes we hear other people say:
1) Asians have high IQs. They are smarter than most in Math and Science. These people are more likely to succeed in school. (Positive stereotype)
2) Christians are homophobic. They are blinded by God and will recruit you if you go near them. (Negative stereotype)
3) African Americans can dance. (Positive stereotype)
4) Caucasians can't dance. (Negative stereotype)
5) French are romantic. (Positive stereotype)
6) Irish are alcoholics. (Negative stereotype)
7) Italians are good lovers. (Positive stereotype)
8) Germans are Nazis or fascists. (Negative stereotype)
9) Middle Easterners hate Americans. (Negative stereotype)
10) Russians are violent. (Negative stereotype)
11) Gay men are feminine while lesbian women are masculine.
12) Asians know martial arts.
13) African Americans play basketball.
14) Women are neat and like to clean.
15) Men take charge in a relationship.
16) Asian men have smallest penis size while African American men have the biggest penis size.
17) Immigrants have poor English.
18) Indians work at a deli.
19) Caucasian women do not have big boobs naturally like African American females.
20) Jewish people are cheap.
Okay, I think twenty is enough for now. But the list can go on and on. In the first ten, you'll see that I either put "Positive stereotype" or "Negative stereotype" to each one. It is to point out that not all stereotypes are bad, even if they're not true. For example, I am an Asian. Although I might not be "a genius" in math, kids in my class think I am and this boosts my confidence. I used that as a motivation to perform better in Calculus. But there are bad stereotypes also. Most people think all Christians are homophobic, which is another false impression people get from Christianity. Sure, the religion teaches that being with the same sex might be a sin. However, there are Christians who support gay movements and many of them do not try to recruit me into their religious group.
I find it really funny how much people enjoy stereotyping others but hate it when other people do it to them. And people actually believe in these stereotypes! We have to differentiate between stereotypes and facts. In addition, I try really hard to find answers to how these overused phrases came about. Then a question popped into my head: Do we shape the stereotypes or do the stereotypes shape us?
Label is important. It is the only way for us to classify or identify ourselves. However, who truly have the ultimate right to categorize us? It's you. You have the rights to be whatever you want. No one should tell you what you are and what you are supposed to be. If you put up an identity for yourself, who has the right to take that away?
The only stereotype I have trouble with is the penis size. How would anyone know if this is true or not? How would anyone know if any stereotype is true?

That's deep. Although I'm not sure if I'm interpreting it right...perhaps you can elaborate more on it?

It was in reference to your penis question. That should help your interpretation.

Did you ever figure that one out?

Did you know there was a study done on penis size of different ethnicities and apparently there is a trend...something in the genes. The hard part is that there is so much inter-breeding between cultures that I find it really hard to find that accurate today.
Did you know there is also a rumored link between the type of underwear you prefer and the size of your penis? Found that interesting. Congratulations to you commandos out there....and if you are stuck in tighty-whiteys...well let me just say
I know these can be offensive, but seriously people, lighten up. If you meet someone ignorant to believe crap like this just smile and pat them on the head. Some people just don't catch on as quickly in life.
Think about it...

That comment, just as an fyi, was concerning the comment, "They glide a mile 6 inches at a time." Truelife90 strikes me as the kind of girl who wouldn't get that.

I heard there was a link between the type of underwear the man wears to the sex of the child he produces. Tighty-whities are more likely to produce females. Something about the temperature in which the sperm are stored....

I personally think allot of people let stereo types define them and we as people need to break these molds.
I'm a Christian and I love people in general, I do think homosexuality is a sin but I still accept people and maybe if they are convicted by what I have to say will be interested in learning more and maybe even become a believer, however there is no personal gain for me for a person to become a Christian except maybe bring me joy in believing they have found a positive purpose and see them on there journey through life and try to help.
But lets not let our selves be stereo typed and lets learn about people before we do label them unfairly.
I also think these stereotypes influent us in so many ways. Even if you're Christian, I don't think you'd label yourself as homophobic nor do I think you are one. Thanks for the comment.
"there is no personal gain for me for a person to become a Christian except maybe bring me joy in believing they have found a positive purpose and see them on there journey through life and try to help." - I never heard anyone said this before. It sounded quite beautiful.
"But lets not let our selves be stereo typed and lets learn about people before we do label them unfairly."- I couldn't agree with you more.
By the way, I didn't know stereotype can be typed like stereo type. Which way is the correct form?

Oops my mistake, stereotype is correct haha sorry about that.
But thank you for the reply, you sound like a nice person.
Stereotypes amuse me.
I'm a mexican; therefore I am a lazy worker, some or all of my family must be illegal, i must speak spanish, I drive a truck with caligraphy on the back window & I am destined to work as a construction worker [men] or talk really loud and pop out lots of babies [women]
ha this makes me smile.
Haha...
... don't forget that if you lived in NY you'd work on a farm for less than minimum wage and you'd like cats. Alot. ; )
Stereotypes are funny. They teach you how to roll with the punches. I'm a paraplegic so the following must be true: I'm incapable of anything, I'm mentally retarded, people must talk slow to me and others must take care of me. None of its true, but it helps to know what shit people might throw at you. At least I know how to deal with them when their rude.
I agree with everything said here... especially the humor.
That's really the only response you can have to stereotypes, even if someone is stereotyping you. To be like, "Oh, haha" because in the end, maybe there's a little bit of truth in it. Maybe the Irish really do drink a little bit more than other nationalities, and the Germans do like to fight. That's just a part of genetics or cultural stigma, and we can try to get rid of it by fighting it and being angry, or by just laughing it off and saying, "Wow that's really ridiculous, but it's maybe just a little bit true."
That's just my take on things.
"The only stereotype I have trouble with is the penis size. How would anyone know if this is true or not?"
Isn't the answer obvious? By noticing the size of penises and the race of their owners.
i have another stereotypes for u:
white girls(like me)casn fuck hard
I'm going to play referee and drop the flag. Elaborate on that before I delete it.

I didn't hear this one until I told my friends I was transferring to a Woman's College:
If you go to school with all women you are a lesbian and/or will soon become one because of the estrogen.
Now my nickname with them is "lesbian" (not offensive considering the one who came up with that is a lesbian and it is all in good fun). Funny enough, the school was once a religious college and we have a high rate of preacher's kids, so I'm curious how the christian stereotype and this stereotype my friends gave me work together.
Oh oh oh, and did we have the Dumb Blonde stereotype up there? I broke that one a long time ago, not that I don't have my moments.
It is all in how you look at them.
Think about it...

This was good, truelife (and yes, I know I'm a few months late with this comment).
I think there's significant real evidence to support the "Asians are smart" stereotype. China and Japan are much more rigorous with their education than America is, and so kids are smarter because of it. That's not to say that all Asians should immediately be assumed geniuses. Heck, they could be American born with a crappy American education too!
Good list. I knew most of these already. My friend had a problem with the Jew stereotype. She was a young marine, and the other young marines threw pennies at her and said that stereotype. She had to quit this group because even the leader of the young marines was ignorant.
