Homeless in New Orleans

I am attending college in New Orleans. Although I enjoy the college I am going to, I find that the area has a severe poverty level. There are over two hundred people living under a via duct. The smell of urine is everywhere. I went to a city counsil meeting and found out that they had run out of funds. They had put people into hotel rooms, probably because they overreacted to the sight. But, hotels are expensive and now they have no money and neither the state nor federal government will help them. Now hundreds of homeless people are left to sleep in tents and on matresses right on the sidewalks.

It is not the poor persons fault that they were left homeless. Hurricane Katrina did that to them. I guess the saddest part of all is that while they were left without anything, the middle class got additional funds from the government and paid off there houses. Other houses are left in ruins and the homeowners fled with there government checks. These homes remain unavailable to the homeless due to the city government. At the same time HUD has torn down the low income apartments in the hope they can sell the land to a wealthy developer.

This is were poor government management did the poor in. It started down here with a poor evacuation plan, thousands of needless deaths and water, water everywhere and not a drop to spare. So, the federal government sent ice, it melted on the trucks while people went thirsty because no one was told to issue the ice out. Then it moved on to money issued and people taking what they could and leaving there homes abandoned. These house are up for sale for twice what they are worth. The insurance companies uped there rates and fema sent the rent sky rocketing. Still no help for the poor. The homeless slept in the streets while the shelters were packed with visting churches that had come to save the middleclass homeowners.

Two years later people are still dying. There is no more funds and Bush cut the funding for the physical year of 2008. Now we are at survival of the fittest. With no funds and no shelter these homeless live on. I'm not sure that the government really wanted them to survive. They may cost too much.

This is really sad. Our government should be able to help their own people. but they don't. Now, I have strong feelings about Myanmar but it seems odd that we rushed to help them while a few years after Katrina we still have people homeless and dying in New Orleans. Don't get me wron though, I think we should help Myanmar but still, it seems odd.

PS It is fiscal* year not physical. :]

Drugs!

To me common sense would say, It's time to move and start over.
Homelessness is never simply a lack of help, it's predominantly a person who has given up or is addicted.

You're pretty much spot on with the second to last paragraph. Basically, the government will not do anything for them. especially the New Orleans government. New Orleans has to have one of the most corrupt governments ever. They achieve so little because their primary concern is always trying to steal as much money as possible. I think that anyone who wants to help out would be much more successful giving money to random people off the streets than giving to the city government.
