People don't really think that African American can be racist, but I beg to differ. This is my first year at Spelman College, and I'm sick of hearing hearing about my blackness and my womaness. OHHH! We have a required class for all freshmen(Oh yeah, we're discouraged from using that phrase because we aren't men.lol.), and it's all about people of African descent and women around the world. We talk about the Atlantic slave trade and other things along those lines, and at first it was pretty interesting. I learned a lot of history that I didn't know, but if I hear another word about our oppression I'm going to scream! I absolutely hate it.Yeah this country has dealt with some color and racism issues, but seriously...we have to heal and MOVE ON. There are people who study this stuff, and, like I said, it's fascinating at first. But if you aren't careful, you'll get sucked in and end up hating white people. In class it's okay to say "the whites", "the white man", and "them." And I have to admit, sometimes I say it just because it's fun. My professor claims that Walt Disney was racist. Have you noticed how none of the princesses are black? Do you remember the monkey scene in the jungle book? Man, it's screwing up my childhood memories. I feel like their trying to make me hate white people, and I refuse to hate any race. We've suffered a heck of a lot as a race, but we have to forgive and move on.

We need to face it. Us white men will be oppressed by that thought for years to come. It is not racism in Disney movies but just looking between the lines for some trouble to start.
Thank you for posting and speaking up...dwelling on the past is usually not good and people end up getting upset over something that happened and is about over...not saying its gone it sort of self sustaining...anyways again thanks for an awesome post.
It is impossible to be black and racist in a classroom were there is no dominate society to impose racist ideology. Since you are in an environment that is merely discussing the history of blacks then it is impossible to be racist. Now what you have a problem with is the topics that are being discussed in the class. The issue of racism isn't going to go away into some magical bubble. Learning about the history of the racism is imperative to our bettering ourselves as a race.
Blaming the problem on Blacks not being able to move nn is neglecting the problem that whites do not recognize that racism still exist, and they have yet to make up for injustice they have cause on blacks. Imagine if we got the treatment that Jews got after the holocaust?
I would not say you end up hating white people. You do however feel a great dislike for them. (I guess that might be hate) I would not say we should forgive them if they never have apologized. What they did to a group of Human beings because of they color is the greatest tragedy that has occurred in history. They kill so many of us, enslaved, colonized, destroyed a whole continent, and they continue...

Cyrah...you are not the only one. My family is like that - well most of our families are but it gets irritating to a point because it's like saying so it's ok to be racist to those who haven't yet showed an ounce of racism towards you just because their parents or ancestors did so in the PAST!! It is important to know about one's culture but sometimes, people have a tendency to take pride just a bit too far.
I don't agree. You can only be racist if it effects another individual. That's why whites are racist and blacks just discriminate. Unless I don't hire a white person because of race, I cannot be racist. Watch what they do when they are in control of America when we are grown...Then we can see if they are racists or not.

Racism goes both ways. I know of a company that hires blacks when necessary but still has a Confederate flag in view for their customers to see. Black people have a HUGE issue with stuff like this. We rip it apart! But we discriminate too. When we own businesses, we tend to hire people who think like us. We hire blacks. Hatred for against an entire race of people is racism. The same goes for racial discrimination. And, yes, you can forgive someone without their apology. It's actually a very freeing thing if you've ever tried it. I think the education about our history needs to continue, but we don't need to encourage a hate for people. Our kids need to know what's going on, but, more importantly, we need to look for ways to heal.

Yes I agree. See I look at society like this. There are still parents that teach their kids racism but over the next couple of generations racism will be weeded out to the full. Now granted there will still be racism but it will not be on as "big" of a scale as people tend to make it be. I personally do not think it is as big as people make it to be.
I mean in my eyes there are goods and bads in all races. There are blacks then there are niggers, there are whites and then there are honkies or white trash, same with latinos and beaners, and asians and chinks. Otherwords it does not matter what group you are there will always be bad people within it.
I totally agree with what you said! And I have always had trouble at not getting mad at racists and people like your teacher who is literally raising people up to be racists! I try so hard not even to notice race. There should not be a problem with race at all. The only difference between white and black, is white skin....and black skin! We all still eat, drink, love, laugh, mess up, sleep, use the bathroom WE'RE ALL HUMAN BEINGS HERE!
Even if I feel like the race doesn't matter to me, there's no way to escape it. Just the other day I was on a web site called you tube, and I came across a video called "White wannabe getho kids" So just for the heck of it I clicked on it. It was a white guy sitting in a car and the car was bouncing up and down. Then the camera zoomed out so you could see two other white dudes jumping up and down on the back of the car. After 12 seconds the clip was over, and you would not believe the comments people left! I've never seen so much racist words in my life.
Another example, I walked in the mall with my mom, and there's not a single white person in sight, doesn't bother me, all I see are people. But yet, if I try and talk to someone they give me this really kinda hateful look and don't say anything. We barly got this one lady in the shoestore to let us pay for our items. And it's the sameway for black people in a mainly white area.
I don't know, when I get a hateful look from black people I feel real guilty. In my old school I learned about all these black people who stood up and made a difference for their race and all this, and I'm thinking "Why were us white people such stupid jerks???" When I see a black person shoot me a look I feel guilty like it's my fault the whole race war started. I was talking to my brother about it and he said he can't help but get mad that some black people can't forgive us white people. BUT then there are still those same white people like in history, that hate black people. So why should black people forgive us?
I could sit here and type all day long, but in the end, I think there are three races. Black, white, and christian. And as a christian I feel I don't really need to worry as much about all this race stuff. I go to a mainly black church and I love it, I love the people and the raceist thoughts never really pop up in my head!
I think is's very humorous to hear that this sort of discourse takes place at a HBC. I read recently that most Black Colleges are having a hard time raising funds to support their schools. Many of the reasons that various universities are able to have such large endowments is by former alumni moving on to be sucessful and donating to the school.(Harvard, Stanford and so on) Although Black Colleges do not require all their students to be black, they certainly do not reach out to other races, races that could help add to their very small yearly endowment. But if a white student were to attend classes such as the one you speak of, they most likely would not feel particularly welcome at your school, and if they decide not to transfer out but instead stay, they might not be as inclined to give money to a school in an attempt to further it's very spiteful education. Your faculty is only shooting themselves in the foot, and should be more careful of what they say.
