The second week of March has marked the broadcast of another devastating blow to US male politicians. Tuesday, federal investigators released an affidavit that led to allegations of New York State Governor Eliot Spitzer's involvement in a high-end international prostitution ring. According to an ABC News Special Report, Spitzer had been involved in transactions with the ring for as long as ten years. CNN.com reported the website Spitzer used charged between $1,000 - $5,500 an hour for the girls.
This is just the most recent case in a line of inappropriate behavior by US politicians. In just over three years, there have been six cases of extramarital affairs while in office. Here is a list of those cases (CNN.com):
- August 2004: New Jersey Governor James McGreevey resigned after revealing he had participated in extramarital affairs with a man.
- September 2006: Florida Republican Representative Mark Foley resigned after he sent sexually explicit text messages and emails to congressional pages.
- July 2007: LA Mayor Antonio Villariagosa announced, just weeks after he separated from his wife, that he had an affair with a local television reporter.
- July 2007: Louisiana Republican Representative David Vitter apologized for a previous "sin" after his phone number was found in records for a D.C. escort service.
- September 2007: Idaho Republican Senator Larry Craig was arrested during a sting operation in an airport for lewd behavior after allegedly soliciting inappropriate behavior by tapping his foot under a stall wall in a restroom.
- January 2008 - Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick apologized to the public and his wife after the Detroit Free Press published he had sent romantic text messages to his Chief of Staff. His Chief of Staff resigned, but Kilpatrick refused.
This list does not include the sex scandals that did not gain as much attention from the media. Regardless, it seems that today's politicians have too much free time on their hands. Instead of lowering taxes, improving health care and the education system, it appears they have only one thing on their mind. Maybe there is a new meaning for "conservative" in Washington that they have failed to share with the public.

Ok, have you heard of this guy who got tons of pussy, I think his name was Kennedy. Yeah, John F. Kennedy I think his name was.

Sex and affairs are hardly new. For instance, in my blog about Spitzer: http://www.progressiveu.org/161229-politics-and-prostitution someone left a comment about Henry the Eight and all of his illicit activities.

I'm not justifying their actions, but in their defense, politicians have a lot of pressure, and I guess they use different methods to blow off stress. Just because they get a little crazy in their personal life, it doesnt' mean they can't do their job.
what Spitzer did, he did a lot of good too. if you look at his history as a power figure, it's lined with more good than bad. i think everyone can agree that a person that holds a position in running our country should probably not be taking part in such actions. but let's pretend it's you yourself committing these "acts of sin." would you want it to be nationally proclaimed? probably not. and no, if you did something like this, it wouldn't be a huge deal, because you don't help run this country. i feel like everyone has a reason for their actions. he probably wasn't making the best choices as a man in his position probably should have made; but the fact remains that he is still a good bad who made bad choices.
