Today in my child development class we watched The Miracle of Life. Now if anyone remembers this movie from high school health class you all know how disturbing the end scene can be. A baby that size should not be coming out of a space that small…..
Anyway the most interesting part of the movie to me was the images of the baby fetus at different stages in pregnancy. I am pro-choice when it comes to abortion, only because I don’t believe that someone has the right to tell anyone what to do with their body. I personally would never be able to have an abortion and after watching this movie my thoughts are definitely secure. Because…
At 7 weeks although the embryo is only 3 /4 an inch long has well defined fingers and can move them slightly. That is around the time most women find out they are pregnant and consider/complete an abortion.
At 8 weeks the toe joints are completely visible
At 10 weeks the embryo is considered a fetus and while only two inches long they have
can move actively
At 12 weeks the fetus is 2 ½ inches long. 12 weeks is the cut off point for an abortion in the first trimester
At 14 weeks the fetus can suck its own thumb
At 16 weeks the fetus can actively turn around inside the mother
And at 18 months, at 5 ½ inches long the fetus has formed lips and eyes, although they are closed.
I was shocked that a baby can develop that quickly. It really is a growing child in the womb and not just a small ball of mush. The fetus has fingers and toes, it can move actively. It was an enlightening movie.

So seeing this movie changed your mind in regards to your pro-choice convictions? For me, I strongly believe that the government does not have the right to tell us what we can and can't do. This has been my fervent conviction since I realized government existed. But on the grounds of abortion, I cannot deny that what they call a "fetus" or an "embryo" is a baby, a human being with a soul. And I know that killing an innocent human being is murder.
So my libertarian streak must bow to what I know to be right and wrong.
oh i ment that my belief, that i personally could not have an abortion, was just intensified. I don't agree with abortion but I still believe that a women has the right to choose.
The part of that movie I remember most vividly was our star quaterback getting up and walking out of the room because he couldn't handle watching it. ;-)
When you can clearly see tiny fingers, it brings humanity to a group of cells and, at that point, I think it becomes a baby, not just a fetus.
Other people don't agree. Some say life starts when you can see a heart beat, some the age of viability, others think it's not alive until it springs forth from the mother glistening with the dew of a new dawn.
I've always viewed the whole "life starts at conception" as a just-in-case stance on when a life starts, because there really isn't a way to know. I don't believe life starts at conception, which is why I'm pro choice. But, like you, I would never get an abortion because there just isn't a whole lot of time between conception and when I start to see a little life forming.

I recently saw this movie. Now I thought it was pretty humorous, but they also tackled a big issue: Teenage Pregnancy, abortion and adoption. In the movie, Juno, the pregnant unwed teen goes to get an abortion, but when she gets there, outside the clinc where she is about to have her abortion is someone protesting abortion. One fact she gives is that Juno's baby probably already has fingernails, which later causes her to choose not to abort the baby but give it up for adoption instead. I just wanted to share that because you reallly can't think you are one way or the other until you have to be placed in that situation and you know all the facts. Just a thought....
That was probably one of the best movies I saw in 2007. I think they should show it in high schools.

I didn't like the Jen Gardner's Husband - Juno subplot. Aside from that, AMAZING.

I have always found the entire notion of pregnancy strange. It's so weird that this person developes inside a body out of next to nothing. I'm still a firm believer that it's not actually a person until quite far along.
in regards to mjpeters226 comment, i understand that claiming that i would never have an abortion does seem like i would be missing all the facts of that situation, but based on my personal experiences and the fact that i am 22, and that to me seems like the age where you start to take responsibility for proper birth control, and the conseqences if something were to happen. Im not saying it wouldn't be a huge emotional/financial challange, but i couldn't live with myself if i ended a life at an age were i personally don't think there is an adequet reason. Excluding rape of course. If i were as young as Juno however, my thoughts im sure, would be a little different. : )

It's not the size of a marble... before birth, it's about the size of a grapefruit. Doesn't make MUCH difference, but it does make some.
