Charisma....or Lack Thereof

It's interesting how one sermon can change your view on the church. I'm not a particularly religious person myself, but I do have a sense of spirituality and can understand why people would be drawn to a religious life. Churches provide a place for people to seek reconfirmation of their own beliefs, friendships and some guidance. I work at a church, and honestly it is one of my favorite jobs. Though I don't work there for the "message" of the sermon, usually there is a good one and it gives me a little perspective. Last week happened to be one of the best sermons I've heard in a while about giving up something for lent for yourself and God, and not bragging about it. Great message. I'm not Catholic, but I am applying it to my daily life.

Today, a sermon occurred that I was completely disenchanted with. It began well, with the statement of the message "Have faith in God and you will receive guidance." I don't always believe that's true, but who am I to criticize you for believing it. However, this didn't last for long. Suddenly, the sermon turned into a venting session for the reverend. She talked immensely about her personal life and was awful at relating her example to the message. This caught be off guard and frankly, it bothered me immensely.

Why would people listen and AGREE with such a poorly organized sermon. Not that I expect every speaker to be as convincing as Jerry Falwell was for some, but you should have a certain sense of charisma and grace. I feel like the people who listen to sermons like the one given today have the church running their mind and not using it as a reaffirmation of their beliefs. It scares me when others follow the crowd for the sake of it.

Think about this election coming up. Are these people going to be capable of making a vote for themselves? It worries me that conformists are everywhere in the United States. People hate being uncomfortable and prevent it by doing what they are told. I just need this to change.
