This is definately a troublesome election coming up next year. So far neither side has been able to produce a candidate that I believe accurately portrays the rapidly approaching future of America. They all argue as if there is so much to disagree over, but even the liberal side that is suppose to be so progressive seems to be grasping the conservative side of issues. I have always been politically aware and even before I was allowed to vote I kept a close watch on candidates for every level of government.
Now the opportunity is approaching to make a difference and carve a new path for America, but one problem stands in the way. The next great generation is now able, or rapidly approaching the age, to vote. This will be a huge factor in the 2008 election because we are beginning to become more aware of the government and how it affects our lives. My hope is that after the primaries, when the official candidates are announced and the real campaign trail starts, that some of the views the candidates have taken will better reflect those of the generation that may have the power to elect them.
Then again, that is a double edge sword. I personally have issues with candidates who are willing to change their views so easily just to win an election. I also have issues with candidates who are so unwilling to follow the will of the people they represent because of personal beliefs. Unfortunately, in a campaign there is no winning. You have to do what you have to do to win, but the people cannot get an accurate view of the candidate because it is one big homecoming court. The candidates play with their charisma and mask certain unfavorable aspects of themselves. If you ever listen to Hillary Rodham Clinton, depending on where she is determines just where the origin of her accent is from. Not that any other candidate has proven much better.
Right now, each candidate is taken fairly extreme views catered to their party. Actually, I should say, the republicans are taking the far right views that their party is famous for and the democrats are wavering as close to liberal center as they can manage. This is to be expected because our country is is turmoil amongst itself. It is no surprise that History Channel now has a special with Tom Brokaw called 1968. I highly recommend it because it is like watching a film of the future. Of course the profiles have changed and the fights are on different fronts, but I submit that we are the hippies of 21st century with different tactics. Obviously instead of fighting the institution we appear to be infiltrating it from the bottom. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
What is my point? Everyone is playing this election up to be pivotal to the future of America. Just because George W. is ending his reign does not make this the election to remember. Sure, this is the chance for the beginning of something good, but I think waiting four years will show the truth of the matter. Then we will have an incumbent and hopefully younger candidates. Or it may be eight years when our generation comes to the forefront. We need people who see the world as we see the world. We are just as divided as the world has always been, but the tension in the air is palpable and change is getting stir crazy.
Think about it...
