Take Back The Night

I am a student at Sonoma State University, and a few days ago we had our "Take Back The Night" event.  TBTN is designed to raise awareness of rape and violence in our society, and to empower people to take back their nights, days, and homes.  There were about 300 people there, and just over 30 people (mostly women) got up to speak about thier own experiences with rape.  I was impressed that they were brave enough to speak about such a painful and personal subject in front of so many people, and I was really affected by the fact that I knew so many of them.  It was sad, and hard to listen to, but there was also a hopeful feeling of recovery and strength.

My private school hosted our first take back the night two weeks ago. WE've raised about 500 dollars with the event but the thing that I think made it's organizers so proud was that the school actually let them have it... and on campus. It was a big step for the adminstration and especially showed how far they have come in my time here.

Are you at a high school or a university? And good job! The more awareness, the better for all of us.

This sounds like it could really help a lot of people if it were integrated into more schools and communities. So many people are ashamed to talk about these kind of things, especially people from small conservative towns. I wish more people would get involved.

TBTN is international and has been in California since at least the early 80s...I don't know where you live, but you can probably find an organizaton near you that holds an annual TBTN rally/march.
