I'm afraid of Public Schools

I live in the state that has had the youngest school shooting ever.

Yes, I live in Michigan and that shooting happened in Flint, Michigan. I believe the child was 6 and he killed a young girl.

I'm not trying to be dramatic here, but public schools scare me. I've gone to a small private school and I now attend a large public school and there is an aspect to it that is slightly scary.

The people are a lot more hateful. There is a lot more conflict between races and groups. People don't seem to respect one another and I guess you could say there is a lot more bullying.

I read today that there was yet another school shooting. This one is Cleveland.

What the hell! I always thought parents were being dramatic when they were like "ahhh sometimes I'm afraid to let me child go to school in fear of the dangers of school" or something along those lines.

I mean, everything has been hit from large universities to small Amish schools. This shows that this isn't just a problem amongust intercity high schools where most people feel there is a problem with guns.

I don't want my life to feel violated either. I don't want to be searched every time I step foot in school or be profiled because of my race or the way I look. That might create even more tension then there is now.

I'm not sure how we can make it completely safe at school without feeling like our privacy is being taken from us. Obviously this is a problem that is growing with the number of school shootings happening.

Maybe is a question of gun control? I lived in europe and I never heard of any school shootings. People never really carried guns. It was just so HARD to get them. But in America if you're 18, have a clean record, then hey, you can get a gun. I think we should make it more difficult for people to get guns and maybe it will lower the number of crazed high schooler, middle schooler, elementary schooler, or even adult that do school shootings.

Come now, that's a little broad. I went to Public School my whole life and nothing ever happened that caused me to fear for my life. There are some bad public schools. There are also good ones.

yeah I know. The post was about public schools and mostly about gun control and the fact that these things seem to be happening in more public schools cause there seems to be a bit more tension in the public school system from what I've seen just recently going back into it.

I do go to a really good public school but I still see tendencies with the kids that are a bit scary. The things people say and how they act towards one another is really awful.

Like we have been having all these hate crime beatings and it seems like they are growing too!!! I hear ya! I dread coming to school because of what is going on now days!!

me really fucking mad...
I've never been to a school that was not a public school (except for a year at a private univ.)
NEVER had a school shooting at any of them, and by the way, there are more public schools in this country so the CHANCES of a school shooting ARE HIGHER of course--it's a numbers game...people have shit happen to them...
so...to make these statement: "The people are a lot more hateful." really??? I loved my public school and my public school classmates were intelligent, caring and passionate--
people are hateful EVERYWHERE, more or less, it depends on a lot of factors...you're exhibiting ignorance by saying these specific things

"There is a lot more conflict between races and groups. People don't seem to respect one another and I guess you could say there is a lot more bullying."
WHAT the freak? That's such bull shit- I'm sorry but this IS NOT the case...I can say from MY OWN personal experience...I attended University of Pennsylvania for a year and I had never met such prejudiced snobbish people (i guess my classmates just shared that attribute) but friends outside of classes were not like that....should i say that ALL Ivy league students are fucking snobs??? NO...just like you have no right to say that public school kids don't have respect...

Do you think public school kids, like me, don't learn the same values as private school kids? We are unintelligent/intolerant and hateful in your eyes?

I do understand what you are saying. I know that it is a sweeping generalization. and I'm not hating on public school kids because i am one of them. I went to public school my entire life except for three years. And this is what I observe. Both of the schools have kids with money and they are both very multi-cultural and the public school I go to is ranked as one of the highest in education in the state of michigan.

But it's just that people here are different. You do have to realize growing up in the public school system you are different then those in private schools. you just are. and i know because I've been around kids that are from both.

It wasn't a post to offend people that go to public schools cause i have no prejudice against public school kids..cause again I am one of them

But there is an aspect to public schools because they are so big and there are so many kids that you hear so much about kids getting bullied a lot more then when I went to a private school. I also realize that it does have to do with the number of kids.

and please don't call me ignorant because that is something I am NOT.

so please don't make a judgment of who I am from one post about how I feel about what I observe at the public schools I have been to.

based on your own experience and that is rather a very ignorant thing to do because you have no idea how all public schools are--
You also seem to think that a public school has to have a lot of students-
My graduating class in high school only had 200 students, there are schools I know of with only 80 students in a graduating class and these are Public schools ------- there are more factors that go into play than the simplistic approach you took to analyzing school shootings...

yeah that is so rare..and usually for that to happen you have to live in a smaller suburb. Most public schools are really really big.

and i'm not saying that every public school will one day have shooting. I know that. I'm not oblivious to the world and completely consumed in my own thoughts on the world.

I will admit that what I have said is generalizing public schools but this is what I've seen, hearing from friends, and reading in the news. This is my own opinion on the situation. IF you would like, you can make your own blog saying that public schools are awesome and NOT scary. And I'm not going to care....that's how you feel.

asmaw's picture

and my sister now attends high school in the suburbs of philly and her school is the biggest high school i have seen--- this one is in the suburbs

again, making generalizing comments that are just opinion based (without factual evidence), spread the wrong message such as you sayng that public school kids are more hateful etc.. that's giving a wrong idea to people

yeah i understand. Sometimes things don't have to be factual. This is something that I feel.

and I'm not saying everyday I go to school in fear of my life. But I do understand why some parents etc. are a bit bleh about sending their kids to school/being a bit protective.

Although, you can be too protective which is annoying.
