Hybrid Automobiles

I definetely can't refute the advantages of the use of hybrids in the fuel economy and reduction of atmospheric pollutants, but however, there are several downsides to their use as well. Less important are the low acceleration, high prices, and the minimal passenger room, but there are other graver dangers and disadvantages that the hybrids pose. For one thing, the advance-ness of the technology used to create the cars makes it difficult to fix problems with the car. You have to go to specialized centers for them to get fixed, and even then its still pretty dangerous considering the relative newness and lack of complete knowledge of the car. In addition, if you were to get into an accident, you would be putting rescuers at risks. For example, the network of high voltage circuitry could potentially electrocute the rescuers trying to save victims trapped in the car. Rescuers are told to disconnect the battery and take the key out, but however this is not always possible. Furthermore, rear ending a hybrid may shoot a spray of sulfuric acid which can cause serious burns. Although, some hybrids, like the Toyota Prius, high voltage systems will shut off in response to an accident, this is not always a guarantee. Secondly, hybrids have huge batteries that eventually have to be replaced. They're probabaly not very biodegradable. Some statistics even say with the extra electric features and A/C, the MPG decreases to the level of regular, fuel efficient cars. Until an advancement of knowledge about hybrids is made, I think we should stick to using alternative modes of transportation such as public transportation (ie. buses), carpool, or even  just walking.

Check out BioDiesel and Ethanol (also known as E85) as alternative fuel sources. Biodiesel, for one, can be used in a standard Diesel vehicle (and for good reason, too, the inventor of the engine designed it to run on vegetable oil).

I don't know where the original poster got their information, but my roommate's a mechanic and his company isn't allowed to work on Hybrids because of the electrical equipment in them. He also mentioned about the emergency situations. I guess some EMTs got electrocuted when trying to get into a Hybrid with the jaws of life.
