Miracle" Clove Reduces Rate of Heart Attacks
For a long time, it seeed that garlic was popular with
everybodyexcept vampires and scientists.
For centuries, garlic has enjoyed great fame and popularity as
a "miracle cure all"clove.
But scientists and researchers often dismissed the subject as simply
another example of 'primative' folklore. Until now, that is.
Now, researchers are beginning to investigate the actual "powers" of
garlic, and they like what they are finding.
One possible benefit of garlic compounds may be their anti-cancer
effects.
Apparently, garlic increases the bodies ability to remove substances
in the blood that trigger cancer, says a recent study in Preventive
Medicine (19,3:346)
Garlic actually seems to "clean" the blood.
So, eating more garlic results in much lower rates of cancer, says the
report.
For example, people in regions of China where average garlic
consumption is high ( a little less than one ounce per day) have
lower rates of stomach cancer than people in regions where the garlic
intake is low.
Garlic also seems to reduce the rate of heart attacks.
Garlic eaters had 32 percent fewer second heart attacks and 45
percent fewer deaths from heart attacks than non garlic
eaters, reports the Sept. 8. 1990 issue of Science News (138,10:157).
Garlic also might interfere with the bodys bad habit of over-
producing cholesterol and other blood-clotting agents that tribute to
heart desease, says Science News.
The moral of the story? Add an extra bit of garlic to your diet. It
may be bad for your breath, but it could help save your life!
