There have been a number of cases in this year alone of effective teachers being
investigated and/or dismissed from their positions for actions that either encourage
learning or that are entirely unrelated to their capacities as a teacher. File the name
Tamara Hoover among those who have arguably been victimized by unfortunate circumstances.
Let's review some concepts related to this issue before discussing them:
Ms. Hoover appears in some topess photographs on the Internet that were taken by her
partner.
The photographs are intended to be artistic in nature.
Ms. Hoover is an art instructor.
By most accounts, she is an extremely popular instructor who is good at encouraging
student creativity.
She did not advertise the photographs in her school, nor did she show them to students.
Some of the people who support her dismissal argue that the "out of school/out of mind"
principle is invalidated because, in the event that Ms. Hoover were a historically
violent criminal, drug users, etc... (none of which she is, might I add), it would be in
the interest of public safety to remove her access to children. However, these concepts
are very different from nude photography because they actually have the potential to
influence the physical safety and well-being of the students, rather than merely the
moral sensibilities of those who happened to discover her photographs on the Internet.
Such discovery, incidentally, probably didn't happen while the school children were
working on their physics homework...
It's hard enough to find teachers who are capable of engaging students and teaching them
well. It'll be even harder when the private lives of instructors are examined through
moral lenses, and the decisions about their hiring and firing made without note of their
teaching prowess.

Who cares what the teacher does in her spare time as long as its not illegal? The school has no right to fire a teacher over a personal hobby in my opinion, when its not interfering with their performance at work. Hey, the poor kids will get a nie eyefull too I'm sure.

The awesome part is that her students are totally behind her and have been attempting to raise money for her legal defense (because being from conservative TX she will have to fight it). The students made the Austin American Statesman (local paper) last week asking for donations. You would think that the school board would take her students' overwhelming support into account.
I think the worst part is she is and ART teacher, and these pictures were very ARTISTIC and tastefully done. I don't understand why upon seeing a pretty woman's breast, America ceases to exist as a logical nation -- Janet Jackson and her breast included. I have said before and will say again that the hypocracy of seeing violent crimes played out in tv sitcoms during prime time but the complete freak out when a woman shows her breast is utterly illogical and ass backwards. Why are we so worried about nudity and yet violence is glorified?
