Florida Marlins vs Miami Marlins?

Well today in me economoics class, we were discussing how the Miami governor is trying to have the Florida Marlins converted into the Miami Marlins. He also is pushing for a stadium to be built for the Marlins basebal team. The reasoning for thnew stadium in his opinioin is, that the current stadium is being rented, therefore 80% of the concession money is being applied towards the owner of the stadium. In his perspective, the Marlins are being cheated by only recieveing 20% of the money, when they're the ones brining in all the fans to seel tickets. His other reason provided from CNN is, that the stadium is old; it was built in more or less the 1930's, so he feels they deserve a new stadium. My economics teacher also said that the Marlins were promised a new stadium after they won their second world series within a span of 10 years, but i'm not sure how accurate that is, he's a little vague when he talks.
Well I understand that the Marlins have won 2 wrold series and their current stadium is awful, and that the Marlins do deserve more than 20% of the concession money, but how are we paying for this new stadium?
Supposedly the commisioners plan on using tax money from tourism, but this project costs hundreds of millioins of dollars to complete. What happens when those funds run out? Miami will be in debt or worse, tourism will decline.
Oil prices have been steadily rising, and now commisioners want to raise the taxes for tourists? How long before tourists start avoiding our money hungry city? Restaurants will cost more, admission into the famous Miami Beach nightclubs will be higher as well. Even the Florida Keys will soon be deserted with the implementation of tihs new stadium and high gas rates. It takes nearly 4 hours to reach Key west. That's a lot of money on gas plus the more expensive restaruants and souvenir shops.
Another negative connotation associated with the higher taxes on tourists, let's say tourism doesn't die down in Miami, however these funds aren't suffiecient to finish the project. The quotes given by the construction workers aren't matching the money they are now requesting. Who gets screwed, the people of Miami, naturally. Higher taxes for us. Great once again another selfish thig our local governement wants to hit us with- trying to be remembered for keeping the Marlins in Miami which brings about higher taxes on everyone and more foreclosures and higher mortage rates. I can't wait!

Speaking as a fellow Floridian, I partially agree with you. You are wrong in a few key areas though. Dolphin Stadium where the Marlins play was built in 1987. I don't know where you econ teach got the idea that it was from the thirties. I can only think that he believes that they still play in the University of Miami's Orange Bowl. The ORange Bowl opened on December 10, 1937, but it closed this past January. So, the marlins stadium is not old. It is also currently being renovated.

I think there is validity to the idea of a marlins stadium though. The current stadium is in the middle of nowhere. That is not a problem for the Dolphins playing Sunday afternoon, but it does pose a problem to the Marlins. Weeknight games are nearly impossible. Trying to make a 7:00 first pitch in rush hour traffic out of Miami or Ft. Lauderdale is nearly impossible. It borders on hellish. Subsequently no one goes. What's worse is the area. It is not the most affluent. I bring this up only to say that the locals are not the majority of people attending the games. A stadium in either downtown Miami or Ft. Lauderdale theoretically would be more sucsesful. there would be a more localized fan base. look at some of the most successful teams. New York, either one, Boston, Atlanta, San Francisco all have stadiums located more or less downtown. Many of them have mass transportation that runs to their stadiums. The final problem is Dolphin Stadium is too large for a baseball team. BAseball games do not draw 70,000 people.

To conclude, a smaller more centrally located stadium is needed.

I understand what your saying.
How do you feel about the money issue at hand? Do you agree with what they're planning to do or do you think it will be a disruption in Miami tourism?
I appreciate your input
