I would personally love to see Progressive U utilize a referencing tool, or even a 'certify that this is your own work and not copied from somewhere unless credit is giving in the form of a reference' button that has to be clicked with each new post made. I've noticed far too many bloggers copy and paste news without giving credit where it is due. That can really reflect badly on the site as a whole when others come to this site in search of information and come across these plagarised posts.
Just my 2 cents,
Fallon
That's a great idea! Thanks for your thoughts.

I too would like to see a box you have to check or something, that states that what you write is your own. I agree with Fallon on this. There are far too many blogs where it is just copy/paste and no credit of personal opinion behind them. I am probably one of the many people on this site that have written a blog to just complain about blogs...
So if there was a box or something similar, then hopefully there would be a smaller amount of "Worthless Spam."
How about adding a list separate from the "recent blog posts" lists on the side for recent posts related to mainstream news stories, and/or hot topics (meaning topics there have been more then one post about in a few days). It could then be required that people choose one of these lists for their post to go on. Making the list of post under each tag catigory more accessable (include links on one side of each page) would also help. Having discriptions of what each tag means on the create post page would help people to be more consistent in how posts are catigorized.
Having a topic of the week or something like that, and encoraging as much debate and discussion about that topic as possible would also be neat. To avoid having the "recent blog post" list over run by post about that topic a separate list would have to be made for topic of the week posts. A prize or small scholarship could be awarded to encorage participation.
Another thing that would be really nice if it could be done is adding a spell checker to the comment box. I know there are things I miss spell in my comments because it takes to long to open a word processor with a spell checker every time I write a comment and I don't always have a dictionary handy.
I think you should also refine the search a bit. I can't use quotes like I can on google so if I type in "a year on earth" instead of getting a blog just referencing the phrase "a year on earth" I get everything with the words year and earth.
Is it possible to work with search sites like google to get blogs onto their pages?
I think there should be a spell check of some sort, because god knows how many misspelled words I have.

You're not the worst speller I've seen on here, but I agree there should be a spell checker.
I think it would be cool if there was a point tracker that is easily visible, so those blogging for scholarships could be aware of their status.
And we really do need a spellchecker as well, it makes life so much easier
Is there a spot that shows how many points we have? If there is, where's it at, because I haven't found it yet.
No there is no spot that tells how many points a blogger has . . . but at the same time I kind of like it that way. I used to wish there was a point counter when there is not one, it makes us work harder because we dont know where we stand. But I do think that perhaps like every monday the top ten bloggers should be posted instead of like twice during the contest period. They could be posted monday mornings in no specific order. It would give contestants some idea of where they stand without ruining the mystery entirely.

That would be a really good idea!! However, I still think a point counter would be great for us. That way each blogger knows where they stand.

we wouldn't be able to see eachother's amounts, but just ours. This way, it really doesn't matter what points we have because we wouldn't be able to compare it with anyone else's.
But I'd still like to see what my points are, if not constant, then every Monday, as previsouly mentioned.
There does need to be some way to find out if you are on the right track. I think the every monday idea is a great one.
So how will the points be posted on every monday

I mean I am not sure exactly how the point counter works, but as simple as technology has become, I would bet money that you can view the point totals by user name from most to least in list form. It would be as simple as the progressive U team posting it on the front page every monday. If people knew where they were more often I think it would be an incentive to work harder. IE if one week you go from being on the list to off of it, you know you need to step it up! lol

I'm definitely interested in my own point count. I'd also like to see rankings of the top 10 every week or so, similar to school rankings. People know who is ranked high, but GPAs are usually not given out. Please impliment this soon -- I'm anxious to see how I'm doing.
Another thing is I've seen many posts already that aren't really... notable blog posts. Whining and "internet speak" entries (i.e. "omg lyk i have noooooooo idea what i should do about this problem im having can any1 help me?") shouldn't pass the test as entry points for the BfP scholarship. Just a thought. I'd like to participate in a contest with people who are serious about professionally blogging serious things.
x2.
I agree with that, although some of my blogs might be off topic.

I had this same concern last semester. Part of my concern came from the fact that these bloggers were lowering the standards of the site. The other part came from the idea that those people were going to beat me. But I will repeat to you what Art told me. He basically said that thsoe people are not going to win in the end becuase their posts are less likely to be read and to be picked up by search engines. Plus, as you publish more and better posts you will gain buddies and frequent readers, while they will not. And he was right. In the end it was the persons who worked the hardest that won, well worked the hardest at the times that no one else was that is. There were a lot of people who worked really hard the first three months of the contest but then lost because they did not blog over the summer becuase they were busy, I being one of these people. So my best advice to all would be to make sure that over Thanksgiving break you stay involved because that will be the best time to get ahead on points as everyone will be focused on turkey! I am not saying not to spend time with your family and friends and enjoy your break, I am just saying that if you really want to win, find time over the break to blog . . . that will really give you a one up.
