So today I got home from school and saw three hand-stamped cards with "thinking of you" phrases, complete with a signature. I glanced at the envelopes in which they came, not one address looked familiar. I asked my sister who they were from or what was going.
"Just a little pick-me up," she replied.
So my sister has been involved in company that she absolutely loved, but due to her financial situation can no longer continue working with the company. She emailed all of her customers announcing her end and explaining why. One of her customers was kind enough to go the forum that my sister frequents and asked the people there to send her cards, just little pick-me ups. Today she got her first batch, then got on-line and frantically searched the forum until she found the thread. There has been a good chunk of people who have volunteered to send my sister a pick-me up and I know that it makes her feel just a bit better about her situation. Just to know that people care is enough.
This got me to thinking, wouldn't it be wonderful to send letters or cards to complete strangers. Just little, "hey, glad your in the world and doing your part when it comes to statistics". I mean how often does anyone ever write a letter anymore. It's all become cold, institutionalized. Nothing is personal anymore. I know it sounds naive, but wouldn't it be wonderful to just receive help from a complete stranger and not have that nagging doubt in the back of our minds that they want something. My mother's generation waves to everyone, people they know and those they don't. My generation has become cautious, can't wave at a guy or it will be translated as flirting. Can't just run up and hug a random stranger, well I guess you could become a part of this movement, which I really want to do one of these days. I just find it amazing how cynical our society has gotten and it could use people like the guy in the free hugs campaign in every town. So I encourage anyone who reads this post to get a pen-pal or start a pick-me up campaign and just send letters to random people. Pick someone out of the phone book! Just make a difference.
