300, not so good

Hello Gang,

So this guy I work with tells me he went to see the movie, 300 at a midnight showing. Next day he comes in and can't stop raving about it, the graphics were awesome, the fight scenes were indescribable, everything was amazing. For the most part with anything else I trust this guy's judgment so obviously his pitch sold me on the film. A week later I go amidst a huge crowd. Somewhere towards the middle of the film I start to realize the lack of depth in this movie. I mean I understand that it is all about the will of a warrior and everything, but the redundancy of the battles became boring in my opinion. I know they tried their hardest to interject a story with the wife of the king doing anything, including adultery (very classy) and murder of a lobbyist, but it looked very shallow. The idea too that 300 soldiers was the first wave which took out four waves of armies, before 30,000 or so soldiers joined the spartans is incredibly farfetched to sell. I know it's a lesson in history, but sometimes creative license needs to be taken for the positive influence of the film. Overall I was disappointed in the story, and the fight scenes could only do so much to lift my spirits.

I'm confused about what you expected. The movie was pitched as a bunch of battles that tell the story of the 300 Sparta warriors. The adultery and murder of the lobbyist is probably very accurate historically so it was included. The story is the battle scenes...
This sounds harsh but I mean, it is a war movie... and no I have not seen it, I'd rather not see people be decapitated...

I thought 300 was an amazingly made movie and I would pay to see it again and again. I am not usually much for war movies but I felt it was very deep and not just repetative battles. There was true emotion throughout the entire film, and not just in relation with his wife. The bonds between the King and his men, the willingness to sacrifice themselves, the list just goes on. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it :( Maybe give it another shot when it comes out on DVD. A lot of times I don't like move the first time around. Perhaps you'd prefer the book?

P.S. There has already been a very thorough and thoughtful post about this movie that very much applied to this site, but you're doing it all wrong.
