In 2008, the United States is going to issue a new 5 dollar bill with a purple splash of color. I was wondering why they would choose to add color to the money, but a little research indicated that it was for a good purpose. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing has decided to add the purple hue to the numeral 5 to help visually impaired people determine what denomination of money they are handing out. I thought that this was so neat! I read mail for a visually impaired couple who live in my neighborhood, so this new feature of the bill will certainly benefit them and that makes me happy! Plus, it is about time that our money got a little bit of color other than green and white. Other countries have such interesting bills and now ours are getting a little bit of a makeover! Yah! A makeover with a benefit is always good, so Abe Lincoln is looking pretty good in 2008!

I agree that it's about time. The Euro comes in so many different colors depending on the bill. Not only that but the bills are also different sizes and the 1 and 2 euro comes in coins. It's easier to differenciate between each bill and not to mention they're kind of pretty = )

Although they rarely release specifics, color also adds a difficult measure for counterfeiters. In the age of laser printers anyone can become a counterfeiter with enough resources and know-how...this is another way to combat them. Color/design/embedded codes means difficulty.
Nothing is True, Everything is Permitted

Very good point. I was reading a little more and they are also going to include some other security features, making it more difficult for counterfeiters to produce the bill. It sounds pretty good to me....
