Religion and Politics Are Never A Good Match

My parents are registered as Republicans and are all for McCain. Maybe, not all for McCain, but because they're Catholic, they feel like they are obligated to vote for a Pro-Life candidate in the 2008 Elections. Unlike them, I do not.
When I first discussed politics with my friends, which is very rare, they brought up a few good points about why it was better to vote for Obama than for McCain.
Our friend is going to be deployed to Iraq within the next few years. She is only 19 years old. We all love her and really don't want to see anything to happen to her. Also, I have a cousin who is in the Marines; he like my friend will be deployed. McCain says that he supports the war in Iraq and if elected he will continue it. I used to believe this was good, but in the end, I don't want to lose my friends in a war.
The second point is abortion. McCain is against it. Like every other Republic candidate in the past who is Pro-Life, he promises to end it. News flash: abortion will never fully end. I would like it to, but it's very unlikely. There will always be people who want to make it illegal, but there will also be people to say what will happen to those women who want an abortion? They will be out on the streets bleeding or dying from infections. Women will find ways through the Black Market. So if abortion is never ended, I just want people to realize that in some way, it is wrong.
So, now I'm stuck between two candidates: McCain or Obama. Will I follow my religious beliefs or will I try to go with my political response?

zeitgeistmovie.com skip the first part because they won't like it unless they are openminded. It is something to watch and get ideas about what the government has to offer its citizens. Your mouth will drop

I didn't like Bush or Kerry in the last election, but it was the first time I was ever able to vote, so I didn't want to just not vote. I thought Kerry would be the lesser of two evils, but my religious leaders and peers were telling me not to vote for him, and I felt guilt. You know, because I'm Catholic. So I voted for Bush. I've regretted it since filling in the little bubbles and mailing in my ballot. But I have a feeling I would have regretted voting for Kerry as well, just as I would have regretted not voting at all, even though I didn't like either candidate.

If you support Obama and his positions on issues, then vote for him. You're voting for Obama, not against Catholicism. Despite what some may tell you, it's not the same thing.

....

You know, I hate to be the grumpy person in the conversation, because I wouldn't want anyone to go to war, either.

But your friend and your cousin chose to join the military. If your friend is 19, she knew she was joining during a war.

Joining the military is saying that you are ready for war (or any other service to your country) at any time. You friend and cousin chose the military. They've kind of sealed their own fate.

It sucks to see them go. But ... they kind of chose the military.

Your parents are what I classify as "ignorant".
And so were you. And so was once I. But now that this affects you (and I'm terribly that it is), you can see reason.

THANK you SO very much for seeing the reason in not banning abortion. Like the war on drugs, it would never work.
Now, the next problem is getting these people to see reason:
