Halloween: sexualizing little girls

Warning: This Blog Contains Disturbing Content and Photos.

Playboy, Hustler Hollywood, and countless internet stores sell really sexy costumes for adults.  But with what I've seen, they might as well start selling children's sizes as well.

I am fairly conservative in my dress: I wouldn't be considered a "slut" in any way... but I am proud of my body, and I have no problem showing a little leg.  I am also very tiny, and when shopping for Halloween costumes (even though I usually make my own...) I take a peek in the children's sizes.  The large ones usually fit me and the skirts are just a bit shorter than intended (so they hit just above my knee instead of below), making for a cute and sexy costume while still covering enough of my body that it isn't disgusting.

Today if I was to shop for my costume in the little girls' section, I wouldn't be able to find a costume that covered my lady-parts to save my life.  That's because most of the costumes don't cover the little girl-parts either.

Some costumes that fit this description:
-Pirate Girl ... showing a little leg.  And belly.
        -Devil Girl ... belly.
-Midnight Fairy Rock Girl ... a corset on a child's costume?
-Purrty Kitty ... this is the worst by far.  This costume puts Playboy and Hustler to shame.

I don't even want to get into the cowgirl with a belly showing, or the lady fireman costume with fishnet stockings, or the child's French Maid costume.  No, I'm not kidding.

What is it with our country?  Do parents not have the ability to say "no" anymore?  Why are we letting our little girls dress like Adult models?

When did dressing up to scare turn into dressing up to give some old man a boner?  Maybe the idea is the more skin you show the more candy you get... we're turning our babies into prostitutes.

I'm not sure there is a solution to this.  As I've said in the past, I don't blame Barbie or Disney... I blame parents.  I blame the people who shell out the money for this lingerie... I mean children's costumes.

I hate perverts more than I hate anyone, and these costumes are giving those perverts and excuse to see skin.  Sure, they'll jerk off and commit crimes whether the girls are half naked or not, but these pictures are like free child porn!  If I didn't know any better, I'd send the URL to the FBI's Tip Line.

Yet another post that feels like nothing more than a rant, but it's also a call to action.

Dress your little girls in tasteful costumes, not slutty ones.  Don't buy a costume that doesn't cover your baby's middriff (if for no other reason than it's the middle of October and 40 degrees outside).  Teach your child right from wrong.  After all, that's what you're here for.

I completely agree. There's something wrong when you have little eight year olds showing off as much skin as a hooker. You're supposed to dress up, undress.

I agree; it is the parent's choice ... which is kind of sad. I may not be the most conservative dresser - I love to wear skirts & dresses - but I wouldn't dream of dressing my future daughter in a strapless mini dress with stockings & heels.

Why do the girls always have to show skin while the boys have full body coverage? Boys are expected to be dressed as a super hero, mummy, vampire, etc. which means they are covered from head to toe; they even have masks! Girls, on the other hand, either have to show leg or tummy, or both.

Cover children up! You can only control what children wear for a little bit of their lives so make it count: teach them the right way to dress! They have the rest of their life to become a slut, there is no need to start them off early.

Exactly.

We're allowed to show a little... we're adults. Or close enough to it. We have a sexual identity in place and we know how to handle ourselves and our bodies.

Eight year olds do not.

I don't even think dressing this trashy should be appropriate at the high school level, yet a group of girls showed up to a party last year dressed as the Victorai's Secret Angels, wearing matching very skimppy underwear and nothing else. I thought it was shameful and distgustin. There's something to be said about leaving a little to the imagination and personaly i fnd covering up more attractive than letting everything hang out.

Totally.

WHEN YOU'RE AN ADULT:
A little cleavage is one thing. A little leg is okay. Maybe even a little tummy (if it's appropriate to your costume). But COME ON! That's only when you're an ADULT, and even then "appropriateness" is an issue.

I just finished working at my local Party City and I intend to boycott them for as long as it takes for this to change. Sluttiness is in the eye of the beholder, but it's not hard to argue that these costumes just don't cover up enough for their wearers to survive a Wisconsin Halloween.

I applaud you for taking action...

however, I don't think this will change any time soon. Parents are still willing to buy into this for their children. It's ridiculous, but it's true, or else these costumes wouldn't be on the market in the first place.

On the contrary. The market for children's costumes is different from the adult market in that it is driven not by what the consumers want but what the manufacturers think they want. Kids don't have the patience to envision an outfit other than what is placed before them, and they will take whatever isn't sold out. Their parents, too, are exasperated and will buy anything to move through the lines without hassle. If they thought they had a choice they would buy more conservative ones, but the option simply is not offered.

I have heard customers complaining about our costume selection and how it isn't "appropriate," but short of making their own they have no choice but to submit to the company's idea of marketable.

That was the long way of saying that their loyalty to a store or costume is fragile at best, which lends itself to easy persuasion. If I could convince just one local store to change its selection I'm confident that the rest would follow because their profits would take a hit.

Well said. I stand corrected.

However, I'm not sure if parents will be willing to take the same action as you.

I hope the will, but I'm skeptical.

Thanks for your comment. It was well thought out and gave me a totally new perspective on my way of thinking.

I love it when you rant.

It's time for parents to step up and take responsibility. Or time for society to step up and force them to do so.

Funny...my parents always let me get the boys' costumes. lol I think it was because those costumes cover myself more. Before I go out to trick-or-treat, my parents ALWAYS have to look at my costume first. I guess I'm lucky. Even if my parents let me choose my own costume, I'd still wear something like...power rangers, spiderMAN, or something...

LOL Me too!

I remember in second (ish) grade my best friend was a boy and we were OBSESSED with power rangers... and I was SO PISSED because I didn't get the FULL BODY power ranger outfit, only a mask and a top with some pink pants!!

lol!

Those were the days, when kids wanted to be warm in the end of October and didn't think twice about covering their skin.

It's sad that these outfits are being made to fit little girls, but really it is not the creaters of the costumes to complain about, but yes, the parents that encourage the creators to create them. Think about it, if you made a product and it didnt sell, would you keep making it? of course not. But why would parents want to buy these outfits for their kids? Probably because wearing sexy outfits are the in thing with adults so it must be for kids, and they want their kids to fit in so they buy them it. And if your kid doesnt have these outfits, they are laughed at and tormented until they convince their parents to get them one, or they get one themselves from a friend.

My gosh I love you for this one. I hate how my little cousin, who's only 13, can wear makeup and now look like she's my age. And I'm 18. Her parents don't know how to say no either, I've seen it first hand. They just don't want to deal with the fussing, which they mistake for colic...

A thirteen-year-old with colic... *snicker*

sixth_rebel's picture

Yeaaah, I don't think ever learned the difference between whining and colic...

Simple... infants don't whine and teenagers don't get colic.
