The Best Thing You Can Do For Me Is Keep Me Entertained

Everyone hates the media.

Isn't that what our generation is about?

We complain that people like Britney Spears and Heath Ledger get so much negative media attention. We hate that news media is so biased. We talk about how bad television and magazines are for our youth. The world is a horrible place because of the media.

But can you imagine where we'd be without it?

In general, our society spends it's "down time" with the media. On our days off we're browsing the internet, the TV is on during meals, and we watch the news in the morning before continuing our routine.

In one way or another, we are dependent on the media to keep us entertained.

Entertainment is, I would venture to guess, our most important longing. When we look for a partner, we want someone who, among other things, can make us laugh or hold a good conversation. The same is true when picking our friends. We need someone who can keep us entertained.

At work, we want something to hold our interest. In other words, our job has to entertain us.

When we pick classes, even if they're required, we try to pick something vaguely interesting... so that it may keep us entertained.

Why, then, do we pretend to hate the media so?

Sure, I hate that I can never get an honest answer from the news. I hate that kids spend more time watching television than playing hopskotch with the kids next door. But I can't hate the media for that. It's just doing it's job: entertaining us.

I don't know where I'd be without House: MD to let my mind go after a long day. If I wasn't able to access ProgressiveU, I'd go crazy. If I missed a week of news, I can't imagine how lost I would be.

Sure, the media is evil, but it is a necessary one. Without it, we'd be wandering blindly through our quiet streets, without any knowledge of the outside world, without anything to care about, without a seconds worth of intriguing content to discuss.

Without it, we'd be a dead culture, because frankly, the media makes America.

How can you say you hate the thing that makes you who you are?

How can you hate the embodiment of yourself and all of your desires?

If you can find it in yourself to say it, fine. Pretend to hate the media all you want. Just keep in mind that the media is probably the one telling you to hate the media.

This, amiga, is why I only read science magazines and other such journals. I can't stand the news; it's depressing! I mean, anytime I turn on my TV to the news channels it's always X was shot and murdered in their own home while Y was raped and left for dead. I can't stand it.

Wish I had the strength to get through a science magazine... maybe it would distract me from randomnewssource.com (that doesn't exist, by the way... it's an example, lol) and US News and World Report (my least favorite, most biased news journal EVER! lol)

But hey, what can I say? I thrive on it.

If the media didn't occupy our attention, and provide our enlightenment we couldn't get worked up enought to hate it.

Some of the media is so new that it changes the game to some extent. These blogs are an example that is only a few years old, and surely have some evolving to do.

I like google news because you can write your own custom searches and set them up for your own custom newspaper. Since dozens of sources cover the major stories you can also pick your favorite bias. They have even begun to incorporate YouTube clips into the results. I have 'top stories' in the mix though so I never miss a headline screw-up by Britney either.

Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour.

Too true. And if we didn't hate it, what would we have to blog about? Dance!
