Drunk Driving and broken necks are not just the drivers fault.

Less than a month ago I was in a major car accident. I am only seventeen and have a lot of plans for my life. I almost lost all those future plans and one kid did lose his future. I do not want to use names of the other kids so these names I use are fake, but the people are real. Just to give you a little bit of insight on what happened, basically me and two other kids who were 17 (me Caitlin), 19 (Grant), and 22 (Lewis) were on our way home from a wedding. Grant had offered to take me and Lewis home because Lewis was drunk and I do not like to drive and therefore do not have my driver's liscense, he said he had not drunk at all, and no one had seen him drink anything. Well about 10 minutes later we were all in the car and losing control. I remember waking up on the ground and not being able to move, and not seeing anyone. I then woke up again later in the hospital with a broken neck, bruised spinal cord, punctured lung, 3 broken ribs, and 15 staples in my head. Along with Grant who was fine except a few staples. Lewis though wasn't there, he was gone already he died on the spot. About a week and a half later, two neck surgeries, and a metal plate and two metal rodes, and a donor vertebrae in my neck I was able to go home. It did not really affect me until I got home and was thinking about it constantly. Thinking about Lewis and how I was so mad at Grant, but then when I thought about it he was not the only one who was at fault. Grant had blown a .085 which is .05 over the legal drinking limit and he was not of age, but if I would have just taken the time to see how Grant was acting I would have noticed that something was not right, and I also know that if Lewis was not trashed out of his mind he would have noticed to. I think that the driver in a drinking and driving accident should not be the only one who should take all the fault. They should share the responsibility and learn from their mistakes and incorporate it into their futures!

Why not? Were they not the person that started the car, punched the gas, and drove off? Let's not make everyone in the world babysitters. It wasn't your fault. Your friend lied about not drinking because he knew that driving drunk was wrong and that you wouldn't approve of it.
