Too skinny?? Too fat??

I am doing a research paper on anorexia, and what I have found when I research, is honestly really scary.  "The average american woman is 5'4 tall and weighs 140 lbs.  The average american model is 5'11 tall and weighs 117 lbs.  Most fashion models are thinner than 98% of american women." -www.healthywithin.com   What ever happened to Marylin Monroe?  She was a size 12 and is considered one of the most beautiful women!  Or Elizabeth Taylor, she wasn't thin either!  Girls WITH a shape are pretty!  Now girls consider Barbie the best icon......Even though if Barbie were a real woman, she wouldn't be able to stand because she is proportionally unable to stand, her head would make her fall over in comparison to the rest of her body, AND she would be too thin to menstrate.  I think....with eating disorders, it is almost like saying to God, "I don't like how you made me...So I am going to change myself."  It is very sad to me, that some girls think they need to loose weight in order to impress someone otehr than themselves, like impress a guy.  Obviously the guy doesn't love them enough to see them as beautiful as they are, so why even hang around the person in teh first place?  I really feel bad for these girls, and i hope taht they can soon see themselves as beautiful the way they are.

It is sad, I had just posted a blog about anorexia as well. And everyone is beautiful in some way, inside and out. And there is no reason at all that I think people should have to change themselves in that way to be excepted by society.

Ha, Lovely comparison to Barbie.

Thanks!

Actually many girls adopt eating disorders regardless of what their boyfriends say. Many of the boyfriends try and try to convince them that they are beautiful the way they are, but it is just impossible for the girls to believe. It has to do with many years of low self-esteem and extreme self-conciousness that has not been resolved. If you truly see yourself in the mirror as a certain way, someone telling you otherwise is not going to affect you because you are just positive that what you see is the real you. And that is sad, but what as a skinny loving society are we going to do about it?

Don't try to venture to hurt our body to lose weight to cater to the skinny loving society. The health is the basic capital

Another thing that is sad is that America is one of the most overweight nations in the world. The average height for women in America is 5'4", the average weight is 140, like you said. That is barely within the 'healthy' range!

While I agree that there is a huge discrepancy between models and real women, many real women are simply overweight.

I'm 5'4", and my figure would just look weird at 140 lbs. I'm very curvy, and there's a lot of weight in my hips, boobs, etc., enough that I'd look weird thin, or even weighing that much.

For your height, you have a range of what you could weigh. For example if you are 5'5" then you should weigh from 112.5-137.5 lb, depending on if you have a small frame or large frame. The thing is, America says you should weigh 110, period. If you did weigh 140, which is in your ideal weight range, then you are fat.

I know, people don't take into account different body builds, which is sad, because you are just grouping people, and saying that everyone should be this way, whether it is healthy or not. I mean, some cultures are built bigger than others too.

That is true, some people of certain backgrounds are built bigger than others. Many black women are naturally curvier than white women for example. I know most of the ideal body weight information from my nutrition class. I wish the equations that are used take into account race. But that still would not change society's perceptions. Did anyone hear about a designer's new sub-zero size jeans? As if a size 0 was not small enough, they are making double zeros to accomodate women who cannot fit into a zero.

Here's something scary - I know people who are too small for even the 00's. They're creepy.

And it's not just black women who are curvy. A lot of white women with Celtic (Irish, Scottish) roots have "child-bearing hips." Yes, the ones that look like a pair of shelves sticking out of your body. They're really annoying at times, but useful - say, when you're moving.
