I sit here listening to the news about the possibility of the Bird Flu coming to America, and i must admit it kind of scares me. They say that the worst case senario is that 200,000 to 2 million people could die if the pandemic hits us. That's only within a few months, and that's a lot of people. There is not vaccine for this, and if there was, how is it going to be distributed. I know from personal experience that the normal flu vaccine is often in shortage, and your possibilty of dying if you don't get the vaccine is not that high. But with Bird flu, there is currently no vaccine, and you are almost certainly going to suffer from effects or die.
My personal opinion is that the government need to do more than just tell us not to play with chickens because the next thing we'll be hearing is that the virus has a new strain the spreads from person to person. THEN WHAT?
An article in the newspaper quotes president Bush in saying " "Our nation will face this global threat united in purpose and united in action in order to best protect our families, our communities, our nation and our world from the threat of pandemic influenza." All we seem to be doing to stopping the bird from coming into our nation. And I know that this is a good frist step, but we have been standing on this plateau for a while. In my opinion, lets spend less money on the war in Iraq (which brings me to ask, what are we still there for? Sadam is no longer the dictator, and wasn't that the point anyways, to get the dictator out of Iraq?) And more money on stopping the spread of the flu where we know it exists. If we stop it at the source then we obviously prevent it from spreading. If all the government does is create a bubble around the nation, and the rest of the world get affected, our bubble is bound to pop. So now, we have our bubble... Lets creat a bubble around where we know the flu exists, and then slowly bring that bubble down, and eliminate it before it becomes worse.
