The government wants to read your e-mail

Mr. Warbanks's picture

The United States government is pushing to gain the right to read your e-mails, without a warrant. "On October 8, 2007, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in Cincinnati granted the U.S. Government a full-panel hearing to take another look at citizens' rights of privacy for what they're calling "stored electronic communications"

Since the way information is sent across the internet is label as "broadcasting", the government is arguing that "broadcasted" information is public, not private. This is basically a direct loophole around the Electronic Communications Privacy Act. I disagree. If I have to type my password to access my e-mail, how can it be public?

The United States government seems to think that they are all knowing, and all powerful. They claim that this tactic could be used to curb terrorist messages sent within the US. Haven't we heard that excuse before.

Read my blog on the FBI illegally wiretapping US citizens.
http://progressiveu.org/145933-fbi-continues-invade-our-privacy-name-sec...

What about a warrant? If the information gathered on a suspect cannot amount to a warrant, then what makes the government think they can just go in the back door? Maybe all those FBI, DEA, ATF, and NSA agents need to do a better job. If Americans haven't realized it yet, the US government and its many entities will not stop until they can watch, and control US citizens.

This also leads me to another current topic of government intrusion. Did you know? The US government is also petitioning Congress to pass legistlation that would allow them to use US spy sattelites on US citizens.

" ... the House Homeland Security Committee have held up the the program while trying to figure out some of the more pressing legal and privacy issues, but it seems that the program is moving forward now and a legal framework has been put in place. The program will not be used to intercept voice or data communications, but to obtain satellite imagery. "

Yes, you heard it here. The program has already adopted a legal framework to circumvent the Constitution, and more directly the Bill of Rights. Until citizens make noise on this subject, federal court judges will continue to grant these intrusive rights to our own government.

Passed the government if they already are doing all these things. It would make sense because the internet was founded by the military.

Is it just me, or is the government too paranoid for its own good? This is going a little far I think, plus the effort would take too many times. I email a lot in one day, so some government employee would get very annoyed with me emailing friends and teachers.

the kicker is that they would not need a warrant. They would only need to "label" you a s a "person of interest"

I also want to say that the Patriot Act that Bush signed in 2006 granted the government, law enforcement, and other agency that work under the government overwhelming power to monitor citizen without warrant too. It all part of the national security bullshit. Also, according to the Patriot Act broad definition of terrorist, even American citizen can be consider terrorist now. If you know about the Bilderberg, I sure you can link the Patriot Act and this so call right to read your e-mail to Bilderberg's goal of global domination and total control of the people. As everyone may already be aware of, about everything that the U.S. government is doing right now that so many people are so deplease about is all in the name of national security. NATIONAL SECURITY is the trump card that the U.S. government use in order to mainpulate the people to their will if you are not aware.

I could care less if my e-mails are being read and my phone calls are being listened to.

What are they going to see in my e-mail? "Hello Professor ______, sorry I couldn't make it into class today, I had the flu..." what are they going to hear in my phone calls? "Hey Tricia! You coming to my party tonight?"

Big deal.

I know most people's issue with this is "what about our freedoms?" but what do you think they're doing? Listening to your call for fun? Making bets on whose party your going to or whether or not your pregnant? They don't care. They already know everything about you anyway.

I think it's funny. Sometimes when I'm talking on the phone I imagine they're listening to me and I wonder what they're thinking when I'm talking to my school trying to set up classes and talking to an idiot student worker, or what they're thinking when I'm talking to my boyfriend and he's singing to his music over the line.

It makes me laugh.

Too many people are forgetting that the foundation of the United States was started because we did not want Britain watching everything we did. Thus, we retaliate and thus law were make to keep our government from doing the same. To ignore such issue would be like spitting on the founding father. If not for the founding father, none of us might be here today. Do not undone the great achievement that the ancestor of this country had accomplished.

Also by allowing the government to monitor the life of the citizen, you will be opening a window for future invasion of privacy.

I think what people don't understand is that the government has always had access to everything. It just happens to be out in the open now.

Everything you do is recorded. As soon as you're born you get a Social Security Number.

If you're checked into the hospital, they know why, for how long, what hospital, and many times who visited you while you were there.

If you open a credit card account, a bank account, a paypal account, they know where you've been, where you shop, what you buy....

If you open a cell phone account, they know who you call, how long you talked, and can tell you where you were at any given time!

If you check out books at the library, they know what books and where you were when you checked them out. Same with movie stores. Credit agencies also have access to this information.

Internet? Ha. If you use your own computer, they know what sites you visit and when and many times what you've done on them.

How is tapping my pointless phone calls or e-mails any more of an invasion than what they already have access to?

So, because the government can already peek into your life ILLEGALLY, we should just give them the legal right. That sounds like a slippery slope into a police state. The bad thing is half of wourking Americans have no clue that their "unalienable rights" are being systematically taken away.

We must keep the power in the hands of the voting people. If we extend too much power to the government, they will no longer need us. Elections could be suspended, soldiers could be placed in your home. All in the name of SECURITY.

I'm not saying they should have the legal right.

I'm just saying they do it anyway.

I am merely bringing attention to the fact that they're going to do it whether it's legal or not and we give them complete access by the things we do and the way we accept things as they are.

As Americans we could bring these charges up against the US government in the UN. Ideally we could. We could even circulate a petition to have all appointed security persons relieved of their duties.

If the people stand up, those in power must listen. Now, we just have to get the people to stand up.

I do know that.

As I said in my last comment before this one, the reason it happens is because no one does anything about it; we go along with everything. We continue to sign contracts without reading them and live our lives accepting the fact that there is access to our every day activities.

Americans have to read the small print

So are you saying that we should play the part of a ignorance citizen and let our life be monitor. If that what you're saying, it wrong. It the job of the citizen to keep the government in check so that they don't illegally monitor the people.

BurningExample's picture

... um, how is saying that I am merely bringing attention to the fact that we allow it to happen also saying that we should play ignorant?

Oh yeah, it's not.

It's the job of citizens to keep the government in check? Laughing Out Loud Then we should all be fired.
