OH Lord!!!! Bush went to Vietnam for the first time yesterday, and yet he's making our troops follow Nixon's and Kssinger's "Stay the course" policy.
Seriously!!! He's taking his advice from Henry Kissinger! Proof that Iraq=Vietnam and Iraq is the NEW VIETNAM.
Check out this key quote from the Guardian:
"You've got to remember, whatever the Democrats say, it's Bush still calling the shots. He believes it's a matter of political will. That's what [Henry] Kissinger told him. And he's going to stick with it," a former senior administration official said. "He [Bush] is in a state of denial about Iraq. Nobody else is any more. But he is. But he knows he's got less than a year, maybe six months, to make it work. If it fails, I expect the withdrawal process to begin next fall."
The "last push" strategy is also intended to give Mr Bush and the Republicans "political time and space" to recover from their election drubbing and prepare for the 2008 presidential campaign, the official said. "The Iraq Study Group buys time for the president to have one last go. If the Democrats are smart, they'll play along, and I think they will. But forget about bipartisanship. It's all about who's going to be in best shape to win the White House.
The official added: "Bush has said 'no' to withdrawal, so what else do you have? The Baker report will be a set of ideas, more realistic than in the past, that can be used as political tools. What they're going to say is: lower the goals, forget about the democracy crap, put more resources in, do it."
Interesting assessment.. Aside from the humor in Bush FINALLY seeing Vietnam, its just pathetic that its come to this.
and yet MORE avoidance of responsibility from Bush...
I'm not sure how i feel about sending 20,000 more troops to Iraq.... One part of me asks where they're COMING from, our military is already stretched! Another part wonders if they could really do any good or change the tide of the war, the other side tells met hat we needed MUCH more than them to begin with, and nothing will change NOW...
Its sad seeing our troops so demeaned by this "war" and occupation that they were never given the OPPORTUNITY to win. Every single decision that Bush has made has cheapened thier sacrifice, every single publicity stunt. I dont want more troops to die for Juniors war.
Again, had we HAD a plan for reconstruction, other than allowing companies to steal money intended for rebuilding, and had gone in with all of the manpower our generals recommended, and had a more explicit command system that REFUSED to allow torture, we'd be in a MUCH better position for victory, and winning over the "minds adn souls" of the Iraqi's.
As it is, all we've done is launched a mass genocide in Iraq, and murdered three thousand of our own troops, our own children and family members.
Iraq policy-Bush taking advice from Kissinger?
