Old people get off the road!

Should elderly people be able to drive?  How old is too old to drive?  It is hard to decide when elderly people should put the keys down for good.  I think it is very relevant to how young is too young too drive. Often old people get confused on which is gas and which is the brakes.  It is as if they forget how to drive.  It is not a simple decison for old people to make or their families.  Just as we can not clearly say what age is the right age for kids to be able to drive, it is hard to decided on a certain age which is too old to drive.  Yet, I do think that basic motor and mental schools should be tested to determine if elderly are capable of driving.  I think if we moniter what age teenagers can drive, we should moniter when people are too old to be driving any more.  Just as young drivers are not quite capable of driving, elderly people become uncapable.  It is a danger to all.  Tests should be created and required to test the elderly's skills.  Some elderly drivers are more dangerous than any teenage driver.

I agree that once you hit an age, like 70 or so, it would be beneficial to have a mandatory driving test every 5 years. I think many elderly people just do not want to accept the fact that they are having difficulties driving.

I think that there needs to be a yearly test to show whether or not the elderly are capable to drive. If they fail, they can't drive anymore. It's a simple solution that can save many lives. I also think there needs to be classes for all other drivers too because driving techniques change of the years. Example: it's 8 and 4 not 10 and 2. Most adults don't know that what's being taught in current driver's ed classes are different from what they were taught.

Hunny... they do.... at a certain age.. atleast where I live.. they retest you to make sure you're not too impared to drive. Atleast that's what I was taught in drivers training.

My friend was struck (while in a crosswalk) by an old lady driving an SUV a few years ago. She's okay now, but she was in critical condition. The woman wasn't even charged. I imagine that each state differs in how they deal with elderly drivers, but I really think EVERYONE, regardless of age, should have to be retested periodically, with age being a factor in how often.

hunny they dont do that in my area i guess you are special.
