Do you believe in Global Warming? Well, just recently, snow piled up in Malibu, California while west Los Angeles saw hail for the first time in 20 years! Only three weeks ago, an unusual cold weather hit northern and central California, destroying over 1 billion dollars worth of crops. I believe that Global Warming is no longer a myth and has already become reality.
Seeing that only 1-degree Fahrenheit increase in the United States over the past 100 years, many people such as Michael Crichton, claimed that global warming will not occurred in the next million years, in his latest novel, “State of Fear”. However, temperature in Alaska has already increase 7 degree in just 50 years.
My friend Catherine, who just got back from Illinois, told me that every winter, a river near her house would became frozen solid like an ice ring that continued for miles so she would be able to skate from one city to another! However, this year, the temperature did not drop low enough in order to freeze the entire river to provided her a place for enjoyment.
It is true that the temperature is gradually increasing since the last ice age however, scientist confirmed that recently the temperature is rising at a faster pace than usual. In the endless summer of 1988, fires flutter up in the forest of Yellow Stone National Park and the forest in France. This was the hottest year that ruined the crops around the world from Canada to China. Nothing can explain this unusual intense heat wave except the excessive amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere.
These carbon dioxide came from the car we use to drive to work everyday, the heater we turn on when we are cold, and every single bulb, including the one in this room acted like a green house that trap the heat form the sun in our atmosphere, warming our planet. This heat constantly caused the snow to melt, the water to evaporate, and the tie to change which lead to strange weather paten around the world.
In December of last year, my mother brought me a light blue sweater for Christmas. I was excited to wear my new sweater to school however, the Santa Ana wind suddenly swept in our city making this year winter extremely warm. I did not have a chance to try on my new sweater until last week, which is in late winter, when the temperature suddenly drop that we have to turn on the heater during the freezing night.
In December 1999, Venezuela suffered a massive landslide and flooding due to its heavies rain fall that has not occur in the past 100 years, killing approximately 30,000 civilians. Are these strange weather paten just a coincident or the act of Global Warming? I believe that there are no such thing as coincident and this is only just the beginning of what global warming can do to our planet.
Imagine, what would really happen if global warming were to occurred. Scientist believed that the temperature will rise at its highest point; melting the Arctic ice, causing the sea levels to rise, and flooding cities along the cost around the world. Our sewer system will be flooded and epidemic disease such as malaria will spread rapidly among the starving population. The temperature will suddenly drop into an Ice Age state with freezing temperatures, ice storm, and severe droughts. All of this can happen within one hundred year.
It is time for us to except that nothing last forever and this include our planet. This world has given us everything including our life and families, and it is time for us to give back what we’ve got to save our planet. We must take action now to slow down the process of global warming and try our best to conserve the environment. Global warming is not only a fact but also our future. Global Warming, believe it or not, it is your children and grandchildren’s life we are putting on the line.

A lot of people may thing that Global worming is not an issue but it IS a very important issue right now. Our planet is getting warmer and warmer every day. We should take action now to stop global warming. To save our future for tomorrow!
I heard something the other day to the tune of, 'the Earth has all the time in the world, and we don't." I believe you've provided an excellent foundation for the call to action that's needed. Well done.
Conservation first. Lobbying elected officials second.
