Affirmative Action: A Detriment to Society?

When is the government going to overturn affirmative action.  Right now it's actually a detriment to society and keeps people from becoming successful - the exact opposite reason for why it was created.

Caucasians dislike affirmative action because:

-It's harder for them to get into their top choice college, and a minority with worse grades than themselves will get in just because of their skin color

-It's backwards racism - whites can't get certain jobs that they're saving for the blacks

-There are few scholarships now that aren't for minorities

African Americans dislike affirmative action because:

-They feel like they should be able to make it on their own, without the help of the government

-Some African Americans who get into Ivy League colleges feel bad about themselves when they tell people that's where they go to school because people think they only got in because of affirmative action and not because they actually deserve to be there.  Many African Americans wish they could be looked at the same as any white student.  They don't just want to be a number that makes the college look good for having enough minority students.

Obviously affirmative action is not very useful.  Nobody likes it.  Here in my town a guy I know wanted to get a job at McDonalds but they wouldn't hire him because they said they leave that kind of job up for minorities.  Obviously, they didn't tell him that to his face (that would be illegal), but he was friends with the manager of another McDonald's said they'll take applications from caucasians, but they most likely won't get the job.  It's not fair for anyone.

To disagree slightly on your first point, it is only in rrare cases that minorities with worse grades are admitted instead of whites.

There is a high amount of competition in schools, especially the top ones, and they normally have a set minimum of what your grades/test results should be. eg, for admittance into Harvard MBA program, you have to have a high GMAT score, amongst other things.

The admissions always emphasise that scores aren't the only thing that they admit students on. They also look for diversity, relevant experience, recommendations, essay submissions and personality - whether the student is a "good fit" with the school and able to continue giving them the prestige that they have thus far enjoyed as well as be a successful alumni who will contribute in the future to the school.

A white male accountant who once went to France who had excellent GMAT scores would most certainly be overlooked to admit an African-American female director of a non-profit company who has been to numerous trips to El Salvador and other ravaged places in the Americas but who had scores that are less than the accountant. I would much rather have been in the class with the woman than the man - imagine her stories and the diversity she brings into the classroom, regardless of her score. If she had a test score that was well below the minimum standard of entry, then she would be dismissed and the accountant admitted.

But schools don't admit people on the basis of their test scores and rank them all according to such; a lot more is included.

Having said that though, I agree that affirmative action policies are not necessary anymore. While they were good to begin with, to force others to consider those of minorities rather than always to white males, I believe it has done its job in opening the eyes and the barriers, and now more people are consientious of hiring people/admitting people based on their experience and skills rather than their gender or skin colour.

I understand that diversity is imporant but grades should not be overlooked. I do enjoy diversity because it makes for an interesting learning tool. As much as I feel bad for my friends who have been rejected from colleges when they have good grades, we really don't know what these colleges are looking at. While affirmative action may have been to my advantage, being a minority, I do feel bad for the kid who is smart but not as smart as some that everyone is saying he just got into Columbia and Cornell because he put he was hispanic when his dad is only half Puerto Rican. You don't know exactly what someone may have done that is different that makes that school want them as opposed to you.

I dont like affirmative action. If they really wanted to make it fair, they wouldnt ask for your race at all.
