Society and Sports

I'm one of those avid sports fans. I play any sport whenever I can and I love watching ESPN and pretty much any channel that airs a sports broadcast. Recently I was asked a question that really had me boggled for awhile. My professor asked how much sports affect and control the society we live in. I thought about it and here are some of the conclusions I came up with, but I would love to hear what you think about this topic.
People watch sports for entertainment. Not only do most games take a few hours, but they also involve a lot of hype and excitement. It's always as if some record is about to be broken or some spectacular play is going to be made.
Sports have become a market for sex. Think about it... there are tons of athletes that are selling themselves in ads and commercials. They are building a reputation about their looks rather than their skills.
Steroids are overtaking the sports world. They are pretty much now in every sport (except maybe curling). There are people going to jail, getting their medals revoked, and some are even collapsing and dying all because of these stupid drugs. Athletes want to be the strongest, the fastest, the best. It's not about the love of the game anymore.
Most athletes seem to care more about the money. Players have gone on strike because they don't think they are making enough money. I'm sure any normal person would be fine with making a million or so dollars just for being involved in something they love. The fans have also been overcome by money in the fact that sports are surrounded by gambling. Even coaches and players are getting involved in these activities, which is against the rules.
After thinking about all this, I really wish that sports could go back to being good quality competition. If sports play such an important role in our society, then we should be getting role models and advice from players. Instead, we see their greed and shallowness. Some players are starting to work on their charisma, but I feel like there is such a long way to go.
