I believe teenagers of the day are facing an ever-chronic epidemic called apathy. Just last year I’ve had an interesting conversation with an old friend. For the longest time, she felt sad, rather empty. She didn’t know the cause of the lack of feeling. But this pretty 5’9 strawberry blond had decent passing grades, no sports, and no boyfriend. Which brings about a few possibililities to the cause of this apathy.
Could it be that at this age teenagers are discovering that they are breaching the old world of comfort? That they’re afraid of lacking purpose? It could also pose that the apathy can be due to sincere boredom, which is both common and dangerous in today’s teens. Another thought brings me to relationships. How long can people be happy single? Especially teens as their hormones are kicking in and they are developing. Could the “emptiness” be from not having that “special someone” to love and being loved back in return?
More common than ever, teens are hiding their apathy, suppressing their emotions to protect themselves…from what? Another thought. Teens often are suppressing their emotions…If one suppresses emotions for so long, one will face difficulties feeling at all, which in turn may develop into apathy. Why are teens apathetic? And most importantly, what can one do for it?
Well, teens must enter a journey of self discovery, as mushy mashy as that sounds. It is important to realize self importance and purpose. What are your qualities? What do you enjoy? What do your friends see in you? Also it is important to go on a journey to discover the world, discover the underlying beauty to the world. What is so wonderful that its worth living in?
A form of exercise can do wonders. Not just physical, but also mental. One must exercise both body and mind. Another thing teens can do is to make others happy. Most often, making others happy, fulfills the human part of you, it makes you happy as well even if you dont notice it at first. But isnt that it? You feel empty. So you must do all that there is to fulfill it, being reasonable of course.
Of course, there is more to it, but thats why we must all enter a journey.
Teen apathy can be devastating. Since teenagers are still developing their sense of purpose and control of their emotions, apathy can lead to serious mental conditions such as depression and we all know the down paths that follow. Apathy due to boredom may influence many teens to engage in potentially dangerous and criminal activities. Once one is too deeply engaged in apathy, it is like a disease that proves difficult to overcome. Some may also engage in drugs and sex just for a sense of feeling. So teen apathy is not something that ought to be ignored. In this case, ignorance is not bliss.
