Living Life Your Way

So a few weeks ago, I was offered 17,500 dollars to go to Le Moyne college for academics, as well as a softball scholarship. This would take a 32,500 tuition down to about 15,000 dollars a year. I'm also eligible for a Strafford loan, so that would tack on an additional 3,500.

Not to diss the college or anything, I just didn't like it. It was too small for me, and I got a religious feel for it, which isn't for me.

My dream college is Ithaca, which costs 37,500 dollars a year. Since they're Division III, they can't offer any athletic money and since I picked a very tough major, I'm not going to get a lot of money from that school. I've decided that I would like to take out Student Loans to help me pay for college.

However, my father wholeheartedly disagrees with me, and in "his heart, he can't understand why I would put myself through the loan process and walk away from so much money."

I'm not sure what I should do. Escape the financial crisis that haunts my future, or be unhappy with a college paying for my tuition?

That's a difficult choice, and there is a big difference in all the money that you would be leaving on the table. Have you visited both campus'? Have you researched your major at other universities that would be a good fit for you? Sometimes other universities may not be held in the same regard as others, but a certain department may have that quality program, and cost you much less money. I don't envy the position you're in right now, and I wish you the best of luck!

I had visited both colleges and actually stayed over night at both. I just loved Ithaca so much more than Le Moyne. Ithaca has a very distinguished communications program, which offers my major, journalism. Le Moyne doesn't even have journalism.

It's such a tough choice. I just don't want to regret it.

10 years from now after you have gotten your degree in whatever you choose to major in you are not going to care what college you went to. You are only going to care about making the mortgage payment, car payment and student loan payement. Don't walk away from $17,500.00! You can always transfer those credits if you wanted to coudn't you? Can't you find a way to make it work. I am older and still paying off student loans fromt he 1st time I went to school. I have to say I am with your dad on this one. Take the money and run, run fast!!! I wish someone would give me that kind of money to put me or any of my kids through college. That is great, good for you!!!

Thank you so much! Haha, I totally see where you're coming from. No one's gonna be asking me what college I went to. So I don't know, I don't want to feel like I'm givig up a great opportunity with Ithaca.

That is difficult. Isn't there some happy medium? Maybe you can find a college that you would like, but that has a lower tuition?

i think it's up to you to decide what you want to do. Let your mind be your influence to act,not other's mind.
