Virtual Volunteer Opportunities

Tagged:  •

When I volunteer, I always ask another person to come with me.  Usually they do not have the time or do not want to go out any where.  I cannot blame them-I often do not feel like driving anywhere or even being around people. Lately, with school and work, I have not been able to find any free time.  I felt guilty about not helping out.  And then just last week, I found a "home-bodys" dream to volunteering.  Give your hours on the Internet!

It seems almost too good to be true-but there are many opporunitities out there.  The majority of the virtual sites are nation wide and will not have a local chapter.  They may ask for experience or it may take just clicking on websites.  Some of this virtual volunteering takes actual web page knowledge, but there are still many chances to help out and stay at home.

The website that I have found to be the best timesaver and most helpful is called VolunteerMatch.org.  They will actually take your information (age, interests, skills) and match it with volunteer opporunities in your area.  They send you an email when they find matches and !presto! you have an opportunity.  I have already found one virtual opportunity that fits my schedule!!

Ummm, I did some virtual volunteering and my counselor didn't count it as actual real volunteering, which was a big downer. My volunteering consisted of doing some research and finding websites for a topic. Maybe different schools/counselors regard this type of volunteering differently, but mine definitely didn't think that it was real volunteering; I wish she did though.

Many organizations offer opportunities to do volunteer work over the computer. For example, you can be a peer mentor contact for a shut in with a computer. Another example would be to help edit and type a term paper for someone with a disability. This type of volunteering is excellent for those with limited time or no transportation. You can contact local children's hospitals, nursing homes, and other community organizations like the American Red Cross to see if they have such opportunities available. Or put your name out there at your school to offer such volunteer services.

Some people tend to think that if you are not interacting with another person, then who is it helping? I am not one of those people- donating time for a good cause should count as volunteer work!

I didn't know there was anything like that out there. Good blog

This is really cool. I also have never heard of it but it's about time!! More often than not, people can get a lot of work done at home on the cmoputer when they want to....

"not been able to find any free time"
So you dont have free time to drive somewhere and volunteer but you do have time to sit at home and click websites?

You also ought to check out www.volunteersolutions.org. They have several thousand volunteer opportunities nationwide...

yeah I've participated in these opportunities before! sometimes they are more worthwhile than physical community service (which I find are quite often helping at carnivals/races or doing free labor not really helping..)
